Sony PlayStation boss Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai has confirmed that the company hopes to have its "magic wand" controller technology out for spring 2010.

The comments, which came in an wide-ranging interview with Technology editor Nigel Kendall at The Times confirms that Sony plan to go up against Microsoft's Project natal in 2010.

"We are slating it for spring of next year. One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller. We need a great software that supports the controller at launch. It's something that we've been working on for the longest time," said Hirai when asked when the technology was coming.

Playstation Motion Control is a wireless wand topped with a colour-changing orb that can be tracked by the PS3's EyeToy camera in a similar way to Nintendo's Wii controller.

Meanwhile Sony, who announced PS3 Slim at GamesCom after much rumour and speculation, hope that the new smaller console will appeal to naysayers yet to sign up to the system.

The console which is smaller, and quieter is slated to hit the UK and the US in the first week of September. In the UK it will cost £250 while the US wlll be getting it considerably cheaper for $299.
