Online Encyclopedia of Life hits 150,000 species

Nature database reaches milestone

The online Encyclopedia of Life, a kind of Wikipedia rival for the natural world, has announced it has hit the milestone of now containing data on 150,000 species.

The 150,000 species pages, complete with expert-verified text and images, are now available for viewing on at EOL.org.

Both experts and citizen scientists from 200 countries have contributed to the interactive encyclopaedia, which offers a web page for each known species. It's expected to grow to 1.8 million pages eventually.

The site currently offers over 30,000 still images and videos, Flickr integration, a Twitter feed, an iPhone application and an embeddable widget.
