Piper Jaffray analyst plots out Apple's new company direction for Apple

Gene Munster, the Apple Analyst of all Apple Analysts, is predicting that Apple will enter the TV making business within the next two years.

"In a note to clients Thursday, Piper Jaffray's senior analyst offered a scenario by which Apple would enter the cut-throat TV market by 2011 with an Apple-branded television set with digital video recording and home media functions (music, movies, games, interactive TV) built-in," reports Fortune magazine.

According to Munster, Apple who has so far only dabbled in the TV market with the Apple TV set-top box, will release a new version of the Apple TV in the next few months before before supposedly launching an iTunes TV Pass next year.

After they've presumably wiped out all the cable and satellite companies as the Apple faithful ditch TV scheduling as we know it, the company from Cupertino will move in for the kill and launch a TV set to go up against Sony, Toshiba, LG and Samsung.

Where does this future landscape derive from? Munster claims COO Tim Cook's says comments about Apple TV are the basis of it all. He reported said "we fundamentally believe there is something there for us in the future" at the company's last earnings call when referring to the company's presence in the living room.

Do you think Apple will launch a television? Have your say in the comments below.

  • Munster made the same prediction last February, see link. If you repeat it enough it must be true. Right? This is the kind of idle speculation that gives analysts a bad name. :D

  • If they launch a TV, you will only be able to watch what they want broadcast (after they're done an internal review and deemed it non-competitive with any of their offerings). It'll be slow, buggy, proprietry, the remote will be a $100/month (£100/month in the UK) subscription based iPhone with all your viewing habits reported back to Apple so they can see what you are up to.

  • the negativism in the comments reminiscent of the reactions to predictions a few years ago, that Apple would enter the cell phone market. Boy that one was really off-target (not). It's simply a logical end-game for the current AppleTV, and a door to another huge market - begging to be opened.

  • "It is the next logical evolution of Digital Lifestyle Management for Apple. It will run OS X, it will synch with your iTunes library, it will wirelessly connect all the devices in the home(iPhones, Macs, PCs, Shares, Drives, etc), it will be a basically Mac Mini hanging on your wall. It will manage your digitial life style. Next stop for apple - managing your thermostat, your fridge, coffee pots, etc. Too bad they wouldn't get into the car radio business too. :) Posted by Frank VanOs, USA
  • Frank, I'm with you! By the time that get there I don't believe you'll see the limitations that exist even with the iPhone (which is set to be unlocked when ATT contract expires), It's just the "convergence" that has been discussed for years. In short, it's evolutionary and could be revolutionary. I'd be very happy to see it happen. Posted by Jonathan Selig, USA
  • An Apple TV with a real (1.5TB+) HDD would be a great enhancement. Want to make it even better? Give it a digital (ATSC and DVB-T) tuner, and allow it to act as the player and the tuner - great solution for those with projectors or tunerless monitors. HDMI, Component, and Composite outputs. I'd buy that today.

Too many already have either HD projectors, monitors, or full TV's. Would Apple make TV's in enough sizes to please everyone? Too difficult.

Keep it set top to interface with everything, but add to the HDD and give it a tuner.
