Canon today unveiled the follow-up to their popular G10 camera, which sits at the top end of their compact offering, and we got our hands on the new model.

The G11 is aimed at demanding camera users and Canon see it as merging the lines between compact and DSLR cameras. In this vein, the camera sees full manual control and a hotshoe for accessories, but lacks changeable lenses.

Updating the G10, it now features an articulating 461k-dot screen on the rear, which means it can be neatly folded away for protection when you only want to use the viewfinder, or set at an angle for shooting in awkward situations – perhaps to catch that shot your DSLR is just too bulky for.

With a 10-megapixel sensor, backed by Canon's DIGIC 4 processor, it features a 28-140mm (35mm equiv.) lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8.

It doesn't come cheap, however, and at £569, you might question the omission of HD video. We asked Canon about this and the response was that it probably wasn't wanted by the target market, who were more interested in image quality. (So why would they want it on the 500D or 5D Mk II even?) But more importantly adding the feature to the new sensor would inflate the price even more.
