Canon announced their first foray into the touchscreen digital camera market with the launch of the IXUS 200 IS.

Taking the rather unusual 16:9 ratio for the 3-inch display on the back, Canon told us that touchscreen was designed to "enhance the experience" and that it wasn't "touch for the sake of touch".

In that regard you also have a number of standard controls, so effectively you get many of the normal controls in the menus that are selected via a traditional menu system.

Big changes, however, the sort of thing you might change with every shot, like exposure compensation or the scene mode can be done with a press on the screen. From our play, it is plenty responsive too.

Packing in 12.1-megapixels, backed by Canon's DIGIC 4 processor, it features a 5x optical zoom with image stabilisation.

And yes, if you want to shoot in a 16:9 format you can, and there is an HDMI out as well, so viewing back those perfect-fit images on your HDTV won't be a problem either.

For all the details, head over to our news story, and watch out for a full review of the Canon IXUS 200 IS coming soon.
