RIM, the firm behind the BlackBerry range of smartphones, has been labelled as the world's fastest growing company in a list in Fortune Magazine.

US chipmaker Sigma Designs came second and Chinese internet firm Sohu.com was third. The companies were rated based on their proits, turnover, and 3-year investment return.

RIM did well thanks to a profit growth of 84% over the last three years, helped by a rise in the popularity of its handsets and an expansion into the consumer sphere away from just enterprise. Revenues expanded 77% and investment return has been 45%.

Apple placed 39th on the list, with Google hitting 68th.
