Sony hopes to turn the PSP into a digital reader to compete against mobile phones and even the eBook readers following the announcement that it will launch a digital reader service in December.

The first offering is Digital Comics, with hundreds of comics available at launch, and many more added each month. It has big names including Spiderman, X-Men and Fantastic Four from Marvel, standing alongside graphic novels and titles from indie and local publishers say Sony.

In a continued attempt to "connect" the device it seems Sony is also going after the app market with the launch of Minis.

The bite-sized games will be available on the PlayStation Network from 1 October 2009, alongside the launch of PSP go, with more than 35 developers around the world delivering more than 50 games by the end of the year.

Those not sold on either new download feature might be by the launch of two new colours for the PSP 3000; Turquoise Green and Blossom Pink.
