Ultra-thin, energy-efficient laptop

PC World has launched the Advent Altro, a budget thin-and-light laptop. The company says that it's the skinnest machine you're going to get from any manufacturer for under £600.

The Altro has a 13.3-inch screen, built-in webcam and some pre-installed security software. It has a metal casing, and an ultra-low-voltage Celeron processor that should mean, the company says, that you'll get four hours of battery life before it needs juicing up again.

The Altro has a 120GB hard drive, 3GB of memory and inbuilt Bluetooth. There's 2 USB ports, and it comes running Vista Home Premium. A free upgrade to Windows 7 will be offered when it's launched on 22 October.

The Altro will be available from PC World from 24 August. It costs £600. There's also a slightly upgraded version called the Altro Elite, which has a Core 2 Duo processor and glass finish, and costs £800.
