• The innards of the current iPod Touch are different to the innards of the iPhones - look at the location of the headphone jack, for instance - this alone could be a reason why it was easier to put it in the top/middle than the top/left as you look at it. Posted by Damager, England

• I think this has some truth to it the owner claims to have bought the iPod Touch for parts from apple and it was used in a durability. Apple may have put it in the middle so you don't confuse it with an iPhone.
