Orange has announced it is to make "mobile history" with the introduction of the world's first Welsh language handset.

In partnership with Samsung (which offered an Irish language phone in 2008), the S5600 will be available exclusively on Orange from 1 September on both a pay monthly and as pay as you go basis.

Launching with the hope this will ensure "that Orange becomes the best loved telecommunications company in Wales", it seems Samsung took care of the software side with the boast of predictive text with 44,000 plus Welsh words on the device.

The Samsung S5600 will be available for free on 24-month contracts at £19.57 per month or for £129.00 on Orange PAYG.

  • It's very commendable, and not before time, but I still don't understand why telco's/manufacturers can't provide downloadable language packs (as per some pc software) - even at a small charge. I'm pretty sure there'd be plenty of takers and the production cost wouldn't have to be that high. Posted by Stu H, Wales
  • What a waste of time / effort / money...

People just need to get over Welsh being a dead language & accept it. It must cost us Billions each year to have everything in two languages.
Money which, especially in Wales, could be spent on better things.

  • Yes, very good Craig.

And while we're at it, let's save some more money by dropping french, german, italian, spanish, and all those other pointless languages. Wouldn't the whole world be a better place if everyone just spoke English, eh?

  • What a stupid comment. The amount of people speaking the language is growing. Welsh should have the same status as any other language. I know plenty of people who can only speak welsh! Posted by Dean Robers, Wales
  • Billions? LOL Thought the whole Assembly budget was only £13b. Nothing like a good exaggeration. And aren't Welsh speakers taxpayers too? What an idiot. Posted by Dave, Cymru
  • what an inverted racist!! you obviously haven't looked at any figures regarding welsh speakership! it's over 500,000 and growing with over 40% of under 18's able to speak it...and growing! plus samsung didn't spend any of your cash developing this phone. they may even have done a little market research when making this mobile and thought that people may buy it because of this OPTIONAL function. i'll buy one, and i'm under 20, i'm from a city AND i mainly speak welsh day-to-day! the wales of the future is going to be bilingual, so better get with the times craig or risk getting left behind!!
