Pocket-lint was given a chance to take a gander at the new D3000 camera ahead of its official launch on Thursday.

The new model, aimed at newcomers to the DSLR market, is targeting those trading-up from a compact camera.

Around the back there's a 3-inch 230k-dot screen, whilst inside is a 10.2-effective megapixel sensor backed by Nikon's EXPEED image processing system.

Picture controls can be applied pre- or post-shoot, and a new retouching menu will also allow you to make various changes without the need for a computer, giving you 15 retouching options in total.

It will be compatible with DX lenses, and will be sold as a kit with the AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm lens (not pictured - the pictures show the DX Nikkor 10-24mm).

Yours for £429.99/£499.99 kit, the D3000 will be available from 28 August.
