Cautionary Twitter tale sees damages claim

Tweet leads to $50,000 lawsuit

29 July 2009 15:36 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

One tweet could potentially cost an American woman $50,000 as it has led to a damages lawsuit in the States.

Acting as a warning to watch what you tweet, the 16-word message on the micro-blogging site has landed the woman, Amanda Bobben, in legal hot water.

"Who said sleeping in a moldy [sic] apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay", tweeted tenant Bobben after a dispute with her property management company, Horizon Realty.

Horizon Realty has now filed a libel lawsuit with Cook County Circuit Court asking for $50,000 in damages from Bobben.

The company says Bobben "maliciously and wrongfully published the false and defamatory Tweet on Twitter, thereby allowing the Tweet to be distributed throughout the world".

Bobben, who had 22 followers on Twitter suggesting worldwide distribution was, if not impossible, then unlikely, has now deleted her account.
