Twitter has confirmed that a drop in follower counts, that's shown on many people's accounts over the last 24 hours, is thanks to a purge of spammers and the reconciliation of "data inconsistencies" in the company's database. If you've been a target of spammers, then you'll probably be seeing a significant drop in the number of followers you've got. Twitter says: "In particular, those with large followings may see significant changes as we correct for spam accounts and data inconsistencies".
"No legitimate followings should be affected - we're just cleaning up artefacts in the system", the company adds. We haven't noticed any massive changes on our end, but then we don't keep that close an eye on our follower counts. Have you had a whopping drop? Share numbers in the comments.
