MoD has "no plans" to upgrade from IE6

"Decrepit" browser still in use, despite government advice

MoD has "no plans" to upgrade from IE6

24 July 2009 11:35 GMT / By Duncan Geere

The MoD requires its staff to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 browser, and has "no plans" to upgrade to the more secure IE7 or IE8 versions, according to parliamentary written answers received by MP Tom Watson.

The majority of other government departments are using IE6 too, but have plans to update the software in the future. "Many civil servants use web browsers as a tool of their trade", said Watson, describing the software as "the most decrepit browser in the world", and its use "a rare form of workplace cruelty".

Government advice to businesses says that IE6 is unsafe and should be upgraded - "The first thing to do is to make sure you're using the latest version of the Internet Explorer. We recommend running the latest version because it includes many security features that were not present in previous versions".

Watson says: "Why civil servants should not be given the choice to use Firefox or Chrome or Safari is beyond me. UK web workers deserve better".

  • Ah, the MOD. The same people who decided that the latest ships for the Royal Navy should run on Microsoft Windows  rather than something more UNIX like. Maybe the powers that be simply can't count higher than 6. Posted by Michael, UK
  • Astonishing.

Any version of IE is an incredibly bad choice, but sticking with 6 simply beggars belief.

I can't decide if this is reckless irresponsibility, just sheer stupidity, or both. And for once the British Government is actually right about something...

  • The reason a lot of business and government organizations still use IE6 has a lot to do with various bespoke web applications that they are using (payroll/timesheet/management systems). These systems were poorly designed and tested to work with IE6 only and as such the users are stuck with that old browser.

The amount of money it would take to upgrade the apps, rewrite them or buy new ones is pretty considerable and it's definitely a major factor why so many large corporations and government organizations are still suck in the past with IE6.
