Sony plots "snackable" PSP content

Going after the iPhone gaming market with new strategy

Sony's new PSP Go, with a download-only content distribution model, is to go head to head with the Apple iPhone through the introduction of "snackable" gaming software, a report from Develop reveals.

A new strategy for Sony, as the PSP Go becomes available later this year, will launch a separate area of the PlayStation Store with cheaper, casual gaming titles for both the new, smaller PSP and its predecessor, from over 50 studios, including those so far only developing for the iPhone.

On the developer side of things, Sony is said to be "aggressively courting" games makers to get them to work on digitally distributed titles and has dramatically cut the price of its SDK in a bid to attract more - and smaller - devs to the platform.

Zeno Colaco, SCEE's head of developer relations, revealed the plans, as he discussed how consumers are now consuming digital content in a totally different way.

"Sony’s been working very hard to find our position in that and bring top-end gaming to not just the consumers who were there for the launch of PSP, but extending to an audience that is changing how it consumes entertainment and applications", Calaco said.

"This initiative is about bringing the lighter, lower barrier content to the PSP that has been so successful in other categories... Part of that 'snackability' of the content is because you can deliver the content over Wi-Fi super-fast".

"We’re making games that are just 20MB each, that’s less than a minute to download - instant gratification, snackable content. This is an opportunity for the premier indie developers - and I hope we represent that group - to come in and offer content that will fit the PSP".
