HTC pledges allegiance to the 3.5mm jack

9 July 2009 16:55 GMT / By Duncan Geere

HTC is, for the first time, featuring a 3.5mm jack on its Hero handset, so that anyone can use whatever headphones they like to listen to the device. In fact, it's the first Android handset to be blessed with such a joy.

And HTC isn't done yet. The company has pledged that starting with the Hero, "the vast majority" of new devices it announces will have a 3.5mm headphone jack. "Devices that we have already announced but still come out after Hero will not necessarily be a part of this change", the company adds as a disclaimer.

Many will be saying "hurrah!" who always considered it such a fiddle to buy converters, preferring their proprietary headphones. Perhaps other manufacturers will follow suit, too.
