9 July 2009 9:31 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Amazon has cut the price of its Kindle ebook reading device by 17%.

The Kindle 2 is now up for grabs for American consumers for $299, $60 off its previous price of $359.

Customers who have ordered Kindles within the past month will get a $60 credit on the price difference.

Amazon has not cut the price of its larger Amazon Kindle DX that's currently on sale for $489.

There is no word on news of a UK launch for the ebook reader.
