O2 has announced a deal with BT Openzone, which means its O2 mobile broadband customers will be able to use BT's Wi-Fi hotspots around the country within their tariff. The deal, which came into effect on Monday for existing customers, will see users getting access to an additional 3000 hotspots across the country including most branches of Starbucks.
Users will be able to access the new offering via downloading a software update to their computer.
The new PC Connection Manager software then promises to do the rest, removing the need to remember access codes to home and business Wi-Fi settings.
O2 says, the upgrade, which won't be available to new customers until the end of July, will also see the addition of a data counter that tracks usage.
"The new software will also alert customers when 75%, 90% and 100% of their data allowance has been reached", the company said in the statement hoping to avoid the usual summer holiday complaints of large data roaming bills.
The new plan mirrors data packages already enjoyed by iPhone users that allows access of over 9500 public Wi-Fi hotspots provided by The Cloud and BT Openzone if they take out a 2-year contract.
