Nine out of ten households have gone digital in the UK according to the latest figures from Ofcom.

"The total number of digital households reached 89.2% with digital switchover now underway in the West Country, Border and Isle of Man", said the government regulator in a statement on Monday, as the country gears up for the 2012 digital switchover.

The figures also show that more and more people are turning to DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) to catch up on their favourite shows with almost 9 million reported in circulation, most of which are Sky plus boxes.

"The total number of households with a Freeview device on any set reached 18.0 million, up from 17.7 million during the quarter," says Ofcom.

The Digital Progress Report - which looks at the first quarter of 2009 - reveals that some 5 million Sky customers now have its digital recording service, Sky+, while there are now more than 2.6 million Freeview digital video recorders, such as Freeview +, as well as around 1.2 million boxes from Virgin Media, BT Vision and Top Up TV services.

However, while Freeview set-top boxes accounted for over 900,000 sales in the first quarter of 2009, the number was actually down 28% on last year, as Ofcom has found that integrated TVs have become increasingly popular.

Over the past year around 12.7 million DTT units have been sold, compared to around 11.7 million in the previous year, an increase of 8.5%.
