Apple has released a software update for its Apple TV that brings the device's firmware to version 2.4.

The update brings four new features to the home cinema solution, the first of which is Remote app directional control.

Apple TV owners with a 3.0 iPhone or iPod touch will be able to control their Apple TV with "simple finger gestures" via the Remote app.

In addition, there's now Flickr search that means users can search Flickr photo tags to find recently updated photos of interest, save searches or use images as screensavers for Apple TV.

New view options will let users view movies by genre, by movie, or unwatched while TV shows and podcasts can be viewed by date, by show, or unwatched.

Finally, Apple has updated transport and chapter modes. During video playback, users can click right or left to fast forward or rewind with additional clicks increasing the speed.
