iPhone battery life complaints flood in

24 June 2009 10:30 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Complaints have poured in to Pocket-lint about the iPhone's battery life since the 3.0 update was applied. Some users are reporting that their phones are getting hot and draining as fast as 20% per hour with zero use.

"Before the upgrade to 3.0 I would have plenty of battery life to get me through the day and through about half of the next day. Now I am lucky if I have enough battery life to make it through the day. Drastic reduction in battery life", said Jonathan Parker, from the USA.

"I've now resorted to turning all the connectivity side of the phone off (no 3G/Wifi/Bluetooth and have turned off push email) in the hope of regaining a few precious hours of battery life", said Ross Rayner-Brown from the UK.

"I disabled Push for my Exchange account, and now the problem is solved", said Vinicius Paceka from Brazil. The same sentiment was shared by a couple of other users, seeming to indicate that this is a bug in the Push functionality, not a hardware problem.

Apple has yet to respond, despite promising us that they were looking into the situation. We've given the company another prod and will update you as and when we hear anything back.

In the meantime, has turning off Push fixed your iPhone 3.0 battery life problems? Let us know in the comments.

  • Wake up guys - if you want always on connectivity then the phone has to be always sending out energy sapping signals. That will obviously reduce battery life, that's a fact of life not a bug.
That's why good old POP3 email is best for mobile devices - you choose when to launch a power draining app.Pull the mail and then kill the power drain. It's the same as people who switch on bluetooth/wi-fi on their laptops and never connect anything to it. It just reduces the time spent on batteries.

  • I'm very surprised to read this as I've not had any battery problems with my iphone 2g. Posted by John, United Kingdom
  • This is definitely a problem - and I had push enabled before the 3.0 upgrade and no abnormal problems with battery life. I am lucky to reach 5pm with enough power, and that is with a few phone calls and about 15 mins of internet. Previously the battery was not very good, but at least it lasted until bedtime!
I am also having problems I never had before with 3G - repeated "could not activate cellular data network", even though my Nokia has no problems at all. If I set the iphone to 2G none of these problems. Anyone else experienced this?

  • Me and my partner have both noticed a huge drop in battery life. It used to last me about a day and half which was fine as I used it quite a lot but now its less than a day too. Posted by Paul, UK
  • Huge problems after 3g upgrade, very low battery life, texts being received hours after being sent, incoming calls being diverted to voicemail and hours late in fact phone now virtually useless...........any suggestions please????? Posted by Tonia, uk
  • Also HUGE battery life problems after 3.0 upgrade on the 3G. I never have Push enabled, so that is NOT the problem. Also, I always have WiFi and Loc Services off when I'm not using them. I've noticed the "Usage" and "Standby" times are identical ever since the upgrade...curious. Something is screwy.... shame on Apple for rolling this out too soon. Fully charged right before bed... 25% left when I woke up !?! I'm downgrading to the previous version until Apple gets this taken care of. But I'll miss the landscape texting in the meantime!! • Hmm I haven't noticed any of these issues. In fact 2 nights ago I fell asleep with the phone playing an album (over the speaker) on repeat and all push notifications on, and push mail on and when I woke up in the morning it had only drained about a 1/5th of the battery. Posted by Josh, Canada
  • My iPhone 3G battery life now sucks after the 3.0 upgrade. I've noticed that the phone is actually warm when I take it out of my pocket, and battery life drops to 20% in less than 12 hrs after an overnight charge.
I have 3G on, Wi-Fi on, BT off, and push notification on for our Exchange Server. I had push notifications on for apps as well, just turned that off. Also getting 2 or three messages a day that it's lost its cellular service connection, have never had that before. This is very annoying. To the person who said "it's a fact of life, not a bug" THINK. No, really, THINK. People aren't buying the phone and complaining about battery life, people are complaining that the battery life that was 24 hrs (which already sucks) is now 12 hrs for the SAME features and usage. This is a BUG.

  • I have the 3GS and am slightly disappointed with the battery life, though I must admit that it doesn't seem to be as bad as some others who have posted.

I generally get two days out of it so far, but I think I need to completely drain the battery and recharge to make sure the battery indicator is calibrated. Normally it's set like this:

    Wi-Fi: Off
    Push Email: Off
    Bluetooth: Off
    Location Services: On

  • Sorry adrianaitken but you don't know what you're talking about. Even with connectivity the battery was draining just touching the phone. Completely beyond normal and unreasonable.

After upgrade, same probs: texts coming late and not sending, calls not being received, VERY poor battery life.

I got a new sim from the phone company, turned off push for everything except email, 'reset' the phone and the battery life is much much better. Pretty much back to normal. It works!

Very disappointed that apple didn't pick up on this and frankly given the cost of the handset, I expect a bug fix ASAP.

  • I must concur. My 3Gs battery life is horrible. Doesn't last a day and I am by no means a heavy user of the phone and it's functions throughout the day. Longer battery life on the 3Gs? Yeah, right. Posted by Tom, USA
  • I lost my first generation 16GB iphone, which I loved and have really noticed a HUGE difference in the battery life. I had settings the same, but now I take my phone off the charger in the morning and by 2 pm. am dangerously close to the red line (luckily I keep another charger at work). With my first generation phone, I would be able to forget charging and the next day it would still have a charge at least through midday at work. So it appears to me that the battery point it used to take me 32 hours to reach now only takes about 8 or 9. I believe something is definitely wrong. Posted by tdit, USA
  • The problem does revolve around push email. My problem was with the Exchange server at work, but after doing a few searches I found that if you delete your email accounts (including MobleMe) and start from scratch, reentering all of the information, it solves the problem. I had success with it, personally, but have also read that it didn't work as well for others. If nothing else, it's worth a try, and like I said, it worked on mine. Posted by Matthew, US
  • I seem to lose 3% an hour whether the phone is sitting there doing nothing or I'm reading on the Kindle app. It's actually the exact same level. Either way it will go from 100% to 97% in 57 minutes.

Since there is no way that the amount of power used can be the same when in one cast the screen is lit and in the other it's not, there has to be something that is draining the battery at a steady pace regardless of what the phone is doing.

It's a bug. It's too bad that some people feel a need to attack other people for mentioning a problem. But then, the internet brings out the worst in people. It's the same mentality as the people who post, "I don't see the problem on my phone" as if that negates the problems other people are having.

Just because YOU don't have a problem doesn't mean that others are not having a problem. After all, if it were happening on 100% of the iPhones, it never would have shipped. Thus, practically by definition, some people will have the problem and most people will not. My original 3G USB / electrical outlet adapter never had the prongs come out and stick in the socket, so I guess that means Apple didn't need to do a recall after all, right? It didn't happen to me, so it didn't happen. Never mind that numerous other people reported it.

It’s just an arrogance borne of ignorance – as well as a sign of a small mind.

  • I've noticed my 3GS has been losing juice REALLY quickly ever since I got it. It takes only about 10 minutes of talking on it to see that the battery indicator has gone down a notch or two. I have to constantly bring my charger with me in my car wherever I go just in case it completely drains in the middle of the day. The battery life is certainly NOT better than my old 1G iPhone... Please fix soon. Posted by Nicholas, USA
  • I spent some time with my new 3Gs to try and figure out why it was draining completely in about 6 hours with little or no activity. My findings are that with Push Email enabled, the handset is continuously transmitting (I know this because I can hear it interfering with other audio devices on my desk). I would speculate that this constant transmitting is what causes the handset to get warm and the battery to drain prematurely. When push email is disabled, the constant transmission ceases, the handset cools off, and the battery lasts for two days. If you haven't configured an email account that supports Push Email, then you likely do not experience this issue. Posted by C. F. Kocsis, United States
  • I've never owned an Iphone (any generation) before Friday. I noticed very quickly that the battery percentage was decreasing fairly rapidly without the iphone being used and all modes of communication off except regular phone. This is loss is approximating 2% every 25-30 mins. That works out to about 4% an hour, which is about 25 hours of standby time, in my experience. This is a far cry from the 277 hours of standby time as boasted by apple.

Given that my results are not even in the same vicinity as theirs, I have to question the validity of their results and wonder if they inflated the numbers OR if I have a faulty battery.

When I talk normally over the 3G network I find that I can lose about 8% in a 15 minute conversation in a full reception area. Conservatively that works out to be about 3 hours of talk time. Checking email and surfing the web, however, is of course going to be user/function-dependent; but I have found that when checking two email accounts (not PUSH) and having no attachments I will lose about 6%. Checking two email accounts takes me about 6-7 minutes and consists of reading 2-3 emails on average per account.

IN SUMMARY: I can appreciate that the 3GS has a lot of new features, an upgraded chip, and more RAM. These will all contribute to a quicker battery loss. Also, I can appreciate that surfing at 3G speeds can be quite taxing on the battery. What I cannot understand, however, is that standby and talk time results from my experience are extremely different to what apple claims the device can do. I've wondered if maybe I've received a faulty battery.

Overall I'm happy with it's functionality and quality. I'm certainly concerned about the battery life. I've maintained all "extra-phone" communication facilities (BT, PUSH email, WiFi, etc.) in the "OFF" mode and found the above results. Hopefully this is the norm and that I'm not the only one.

Lastly, I've noticed today that charging the phone in the OFF mode takes far longer (1.5X) than when the phone is on. I wonder if this will result in a more complete charge or a more true "100% battery"

    Thoughts? Comments?

  • I have exactly the same problems as this user, its unacceptable, releasing an update that causes a catastrophic impact on my business by removing my ability to communicate, in addition 90% of calls go to voicemail, battery lasts 4 hours (with 3g off). Coupled with the brutal incompetance of o2 this makes the offering sicken me!!

Huge problems after 3g upgrade, very low battery life, texts being received hours after being sent, incoming calls being diverted to voicemail and hours late in fact phone now virtually useless...........any suggestions please?????

  • This is what i did: after I read somewhere that the problem seems to be constant GSM signals sent, i placed the phone next to a speaker, where you can hear what's going on (via the interference signals through the speaker). It was true: the iphone was constantly sending signals!

I then started turning off various services, and it turns out, that for me, turning off Push notification stopped it for good.

@adrianaitken: the point of push notification is precisely that, unlike with POP, a true connection is only made when it is necessary. thus, push notification SHOULD result in LONGER battery life...so this is definitely some sort of bug....

  • I have battery issues as well. I like to listen to audio books or the radio while I am working during the day and the battery will completely drain in less than 3 hours. I did have the push option on and will turn that off to see if the battery lasts longer. Posted by Sheri, USA
  • My 3G phone drained overnight in about 5 hours with no use. I just turned off "Find my iPhone" to see if that helps. Posted by Jim H., USA
  • I posted yesterday about my dismal battery life and forgot to mention a co-worker bought his iphone same day, different Apple Store location in Chicago area, and his battery life is fine. We have been comparing ours with all settings identical and my depletes at least twice as fast as his. One interesting thing, we have our brightness set the same, but mine is noticeably brighter. It would only strike you if they were side by side however.

Yesterday I mentioned how my first generation 16GB iphone had terrific battery life. I am certain there is a bug in some phones, but clearly not all phones like my co-worker's.

  • Me too, having issues with the battery. I'm lucky if it reaches 18 hrs of the day. Before 3.0 i had no such problem even with push enabled, edge. etc. (first gen iphone) Posted by Ulises, Mexico
  • Yeah, I just upgraded to the 3G S from a 2G iphone. I had exchange push enabled on the the 2G and my battery would last almost 2 days. With the new phone, I'm lucky to make it to the end of the day without the battery dying. I've had to disable 3G just to make the battery last. Ugh, come on Apple. Posted by Randy, USA
  • I loved my iPhone 3G but the 3.0 software upgrade ruined it beyond repair. It would not charge the battery at all. It would deplete even while plugged in! I went to the Apple store and it took two visits (4 hours of my life) for the Genius to believe me, but I got a replacement iPhone. I used to take it off its dock in the morning and it would still be running when I got home from work. Now the battery is completely drained by 10 AM. The 3.0 software update turned an item I loved into one I hate. Now I wish I had never updated the software and wish I knew how to set it back to 2.whatever it was. I should have never switched away from Verizon. AT&T sucks. Apple: I have been a loyal customer since 1984 and this is not your shining moment. Posted by Ernest Pons, USA
  • I did a LOT of testing on my phone today. I found that when the radio was in use, whenever it did any communication, it was draining the battery at a steady rate of exactly 1% every two minutes. So, the problem was occuring when I was checking email or texting. If I watched a movie I was fine. Same with games.

So, I traded phones today at the Apple store. I did the exact same experiments with the exact same setting via a restore. I am happy to say that this new phone does NOT drain the battery at so high a rate. I went over 5 minutes of constant 3G radio (by radio, I don't mean internet radio, I mean the network card) use without going down a single percent.

It seems to me that some of these radios are consuming power faster than they should. I don't think it's a bug, but a hardware problem. The Apple store didn't give me any problems when I went in. If you're having trouble, get a new iPhone!

  • A long post but worth it for the battery impaired.

I visited the Genius Bar at my closest Apple store today with a complaint that the battery in my brand new 32 GB 3G S was draining very quickly. As evidence, the night before I charged my wife's 3G and my 3G S to 100% and proceeded to set them up the same way - 3G off, BT off, Wireless off, Push off, Locator off. I then proceeded to do the exact same things on each phone at the same time. Played the same games, surfed the same websites, opened the same YouTube videos. As you can imagine, having only Edge on made it slow. I did this to minimize the 3G S's faster speed advantage, but still thinking her phone would use more charge because it would have to work harder to process. Another factor is that her phone's battery is known to drain much faster than a couple of my friends' 3Gs - in other words I was testing against an already weak battery. After 45 minutes of testing I found that my phone had used 30% of its charge and her indicator had not moved from full.

I recounted this to the Genius "Eric" who said it must be a process running in the background, possibly an app that I had downloaded, but it was definitely not the battery. He proceeded to diagnose the phone. Nothing seemed out of order so he suggested restoring to factory settings, this would get rid of the offending app or whatever and my battery would last long. After the process I was to drive the 50 minutes back home and NOT reload my apps, rather run the phone thru a few charge cycles, 48 hours should do the trick.

I was dubious but I headed for home hopeful. I decided to test the phone on the way by turning on 3G and tracking myself on the map, something I wouldn't have tried before but hey, the Genius fixed my phone so I can use it like its supposed to be used. I had not traveled 2 miles in light traffic before I noticed that I had used 6% of my charge. At this rate I wouldn't make it home without plugging in so I turned around and headed back to prove that Eric, though a Genius, was wrong.

By the time I got back to the store the phone had used 16% of its charge. "You must have an appointment to see a genius", said the greeter. "I did and I don't consider my session over", said I. He would see what he could do but I might have to wait a while. I'm not going anywhere. He passes me off to Guy 2 who speaks to Eric who in turn glances at me then shakes his head. Guy 2 tells me to just do as Eric suggested, run thru some cycles, it should be fine. "Get me a manager".

"I understand you're having some problems", says manager lady. Yes, I explain what just happened. You should do what Eric said. But that makes no sense, it's obvious the battery is defective. No it's not. Yes it is. No it's not. Yes it is. Would you like a new phone? YES! OK but if it happens again you have to do what Eric said. I'm not a Genius but that sounds like a good deal. She gets a small box (not an iPhone box) out of a drawer, opens it and takes out an iPhone from a bubblewrap bag. Both the box and the bag were already unsealed. She explains that it's "service stock" but assures me it's new. She then puts my old phone in the same bag and then into the same box from which she took the service stock phone. Who among you is thinking what I'm thinking? Why would she say, "If it happens again" when we're talking about a completely different and supposedly new phone? OK, I'm just being paranoid, I apologize for being testy, she assures me that they weren't just trying to avoid fixing the problem and is sorry for my trouble.

I do the same test on my way out of town and the battery loses about 3% in the same distance. Is it good enough? You tell me. I'll be running some more tests this weekend.

  • iPhone 3GS 32GB here with _everything_ off, EDGE included.
Push notification killed, and "Manual" download selected on every e-mail account.

Well... In a matter of 1 hour, the battery went from a just-charged 100% to 82%.

I call it BUG (with caps, sorry needed).
I'm not alone at least, as I read. A trouble shared is a trouble halved, albeit severe.

To fix this, mother Apple, pleasethanks

  • Noticed a serious drain on battery life since updating to 3,0 - I have a second gen iPod touch. Just use it to listen to podcasts while in work, and I would normally have seen minimal drain on the battery after a days use, noy losing about 30-40% of the battery in one sitting.

  • I recently upgraded to 3.0 and had the battery drain issue too. But for me, it was that the iPod was playing even though I had turned the unit off. And for whatever reason it was a super drain on the battery. I recharged and saw the drain happening again, turned off the iPod (paused playing) and the drain stopped. Posted by GH, USA
  • Upgraded to v3 of the O/S a week before it was released to the general public - and have been running it ever since.

Have push email enabled via an Outlook 2007 server, and personally am getting on average 2 days per charge .... thats with odd phone calls during the day, plenty of internet use via WiFi and GPRS/Edge/3G.

Mine's running on an O2 contract (non iphone tariff) sim - and for me the upgrade works well.

I wonder if any of the people complaining have applied a jailbreak to their phones as I've noticed a few comments on other sites from various people who reckon it could be the jailbreak that they've applied ??

  • Same problems experienced here. 16 gb 3G. Very quick battery drain after 3.0 upgrade.

SOLUTION: Reset network settings and deleted Google App

RESULTS: So far, a LOT better. Back to usual it appears. Will test today for confirmation.

NOTES/RATIONALE: Definitely no techie here, but someone had posted resetting network settings to clear old cache surmising it was a problem some way (so figured to give it a try), and also that Google App wasn't fully compatible with 3.0 and this results in battery drain. They also had mentioned other 3rd party apps as potential culprits, but I thought I'd start with Google app first.

  • I've experiened a drastic drop in battery life since updating to 3.0. I'm not doing anything differently! Whereas I could normally get through the whole day at work with a single charge, now I have seen the battery drop from 100% to 20% in the span of only 4 hours. What is happening?

I wish Apple would fix this.

  • iphone 3g w/3.0 + push enabled on an exchange server = battery losing a full charge in <1hr. No usage, just standby.

Disable push. Battery life = as normal. Yeah yeah, "not as great as my " but then that didn't do all the stuff my iphone DID before 3.0

However, since part of the point is that push is useful, disabling it is surely nothing but a short-term fix? There nees to be a solution and if anyone has one I would be very interested.

lots of not very helpful comments out there about "you're just using it more now it's 3.0" "turn the brightness down" "switch off bluetooth/wifi/etc" but there is a very real issue with 3.0 and pushing from an exchange server. My wife has identical setup minus the exchange server and no problems.

Possible that there are *other* issues affecting *other* people's phones. But from trial and error this is the problem with mine. If there is a real solution (tbh from some replies on some forums there are suggestions to try everything from rebooting twice closing your eyes and counting to 30, to standing outside under s full moon and chanting at a reflection of yourself in a clockface!) will someone please post? PLEASE !!!

  • After various test I have concluded that most of the battery issues IS in fact related to Exchange setup. After deleting my exchange account on the phone, battery life has improved drastically. I do have MobileMe Push set to on and a gmail account set to fetch every hour and I could go on 1-1.5 days (moderate usage) without needing to charge up. With the Exchange setup on my phone, my battery would be draining roughly 2-5% an hour (that's with the phone sitting idle). Posted by sruiz, USA
  • I reckon it has to be an app running in the background.
I have an unlocked 2g iPhone for about 18monthsand its fine until a few days back, started losing charge with in a day, usually it lasts for 3 days.
Been running 3.0 for about a month, but connected to the app store a few days back and upgraded a few apps and since then battery drains very quickly.
The app i think is the problem is Tioti TV+. after the app was upgraded it asked if i wanted push notifications for the app turned on, so yes I did. Since then poor battery.
Have you guys updated any apps, with push options, the app must be running as a background process to be able to use push.
Wish there was like a task manager for the iphone so you could see whats running and sucking up the juice

  • my iphone 3g use to last a week with one charge with push on and BT, location, 3g turned off and using the ipod during the day, now it lasts aout 2days.

the phone died at one point even though it still had 20% battery life. When i plugged in the charger, the battery was still showing 20%.

there is definitely something draining the battery or a bug in the battery managment.

  • I have experienced the same results as above with it getting worse and worse. I have had my iPhone 3G since August last year, although battery life has always needed to be managed carefully, with the assistance of mophie juice I was able to get 2 days of battery life.

Yesterday morning I pulled my iPhone out of my purse and it was incredibly hot, from that point on the battery depleted within 2 hours, and my mophie battery pack depleted within an additonal 4 hours. I am pretty shocked by this series of events and reading the comments above concerns me. I will defintely try turning off the push email, perhaps delete email accounts and set them up again and see if any of this helps.

Will report back if any great improvement is seen.

  • I have the original 2g iphone and it has become almost useless to me. I never had problems with battery life before the upgrade, I could get about 2 full days of normal usage and almost 3 days of zero usage. Now, after the upgrade, i literally can not go without charging it for more than 3 hours.

Also, it seems like it can not charge beyond about 75 to 80 percent, even when plugged in all night or for atleast 8 hours. Apple seriously needs to do something about this, it has almost rendered my iphone useless without bringing my charger everywhere I go!

I guess I will just have to downgrade back to 2.2.1 or something <3.0. Oh well, I was really getting used to all the awesome new features! Tsk Tsk Apple.

  • UPDATE: I believe i fixed the problem. I put a task manager of sorts on my iphone and noticed that one service was using much more memory than the others. It turns out that it was my MMS for iphone 2g enabler. I never use it anyway, so i uninstalled it and the problem seems to be fixed.

I don't think you can download a task manager for iphone without it being jailbroken, but if yours is not, just play around with the recent apps you have downloaded and I'm sure the problem lies within one of them. Good luck all.

  • I'd been having the battery life issues for a couple of days with iPhone 3GS too. The battery drained as if the phone was in use even though it was in sleep mode. I upgraded to 3.1.2 and hoped it would solve the problem, but nothing happened. I tried everything - turned off location services, push email, 3G when i wasn't using the phone etc.
After trying to troubleshoot long and hard, turns out it was an app that was draining the battery life, even though i was not using the phone.
In my case, it was a game called Topple. The minute i deleted the app, everything started to work as normal again! It may not be Topple that specifically causes the problem, i believe it is some kind of compatibility issue with apps of the same kind. So suggest you start by deleting your apps one by one and observe which one may be causing the problem. Good luck!

  • Thanks AM, I also had Topple on my phone since before firmware 2.x (2G iPhone). Never used push notifications, exchange etc. since I am living in Korea and the 2G simply does not work here except on wireless and as a glorified iPod.

Firmware 3.1 did not cause any problems for me. After upgrading to 3.1.2, I had the same battery drain trouble (40% in 8 hours) HOWEVER the battery drain seemed to slow down when I was using the phone (listening to music).

I could basically watch the battery indicator (using digital display) decrease every few minutes, now it seems to be back to normal. Strange thing is that I have never played Topple since the 3.0 firmware.

I also would agree that it is a certain KIND of application, not a single application, that can cause this problem since other posters seem to have found their solution by unistalling a different app.

Productivity technology is strange: for every minute you save, you waste 70 seconds either before you can use it, or trying to fix something odd that wasn't there when you first got it working.

  • ps. "Day two" - Push turned off entirely. Posted by lbs, uk
  • I got iphone 3GS in December 2009 and when I connected to iTunes via USB it said an update to 3.01 was available so of course I updated. Battery life is crap and as I didn't experience version before release 3.0 I cannot compare. With all the gadgets on the market like smartphones and multimedia portables like Archos how can Apple justify such appalling battery life. What is the point of turning everything off just to sqeeze every ounce of juice out of the iphone. Of course the battery will last longer if you don't actually use the bloody thing but that isn't why I bought an iphone !! I can see the percentage of battery life used and at present it uses up about 1% per minute with nothing turned off but this without even using video or listening to music. So in little over 1.5 hours the battery is completely dead thiscan't be right for a gadget costing £440 uk pounds. Posted by Tony, UK
  • oh, I am SOOO with you Tony! IPhone number 3... Love the look, feel, functions (well.. phone functions could be better, but another rant!) - apps, internet connectivity.. but usage SUCKS!

Is so very disappointing... the 'must have' phone, beautiful, slick, smooth, user friendly.. but battery wont last a day ( if I take a half hour call at 10am, will be flat at 12.00...)

My first iPhone was fine, although would crash 2-4 times a day. I then had it replaced, and while this one doesnt crash 3 times a day,, battery doesn't last a day!!

    Please apple,, help!!
