Sky offers upside-down remote for Aussies

Topsy-turvy stunt to promote HD cricket this summer

24 June 2009 9:20 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

In order to gain column inches for its cricket coverage, Sky+HD has produced what it says is "the ultimate gift to make the visiting Aussie Ashes team and their supporters feel at home this summer", an upside down remote control.

Possibly managing to offend a few antipodeans in the process, the stunt sees all the Sky buttons flipped on their head, and is, Sky says "sure to make visitors and residents from Down Under feel at home for the 2009 Ashes series, the first ever to be shown in high definition".

Sky’s industrial design manager, Ed Snodgrass says: “We are looking forward to what is sure to be an exiting Ashes series - not least as it will be the first ever Ashes broadcast in super sharp high definition. We hope our specially commissioned upside down remote will help make the team and their fans feel at home - though we’re not so comfortable if they steal a win from us and take remote control of the urn!”

Coverage of the npower Ashes starts exclusively live on Sky Sports HD from Wednesday 8 July.

  • Impressive to see the British still have some engineering ingenuity left in them.

I just hope the Poms don't mistake it for a bat.

  • The zero button seems to be much bigger on the English version. Strange. Guess it gets more use. Posted by Davros Longley , Greece
  • How can anyone read what each button does when it's like that ?? Ridiculous. At least the pause button is comprehensible.

Do people from Australia really have these remotes?

  • My girlfriend is an Aussie and she uses her d!ldo kind of back to front - the battery bit goes in first and the nobby bit is what she holds onto. I thought she just liked using it that way as it gives a bit of an electric shock and the fatter end goes in. Maybe it's because she is an Aussie and they do things back-to-front. If you are Australian, please confirm. Posted by Phil McCrackin, UK
  • These remotes any easier to find when they're upside-down like this?

i was forever losing mine, but have worked out a solution: glue it to the top of the TV. Simple but effective. I now always know where it is.
