We hate plugs. Especially when you have to put them in your bag and they don't quite fit, or they scratch up your laptop. UK plugs are some of the biggest in the world, and that irked one designer enough to totally re-imagine them.

The folding plug concept has been visited before, but never to this radical a degree. The new design measures just 1cm thick when collapsed, but takes a moment to fold out for use.

Although there are currently no plans to put it into production that we're aware of, we'd love to be packing this in our laptop bags rather than the chunky models we're currently stuck with. Someone make it happen, yeah?

  • That's a Dragon's Den invention right there.

Solves the size issues, as well as replacing that damn fuse; the catch to remove it looks infinitely easier to remove than on current models.

Apple should snap this up and run with it on Air. PAY HER ALREADY.

  • I dearly hope that this gets picked up by someone and goes in to widespread production.

While the UK plug design fantastically secure (nice solid feeling that isn't prone to falling out of the socket) compared to some continental and US designs, it could definitely benefit from this space saving idea!

  • We must plug this innovative design as widely as possible and get it into production.
    Who is this gifted designer?

  • I know English is not their first language, but the Grammar NaziŠ will not stand for "most thinnest". They will accept "most thin" or "thinnest", yet never the twain shall meet. Posted by mr_chopper, England
  • However, Grammar NaziŠ has to admit this is the coolest thing he's seen since the ZX Spectrum port of Street Fighter 2. The four-way idea advance of the idea is like something from the mooovies. In this world of increasing idiocracy it's almost tear-inducing to see inventive ideas like this. Posted by mr_chopper, England
  • Problem is now that the new concept has been entered into the public domain it cannot be patented (unless an application as already been launched. Meaning the commercialisation oppertunities are now much smaller, which is a shame as it's a great idea.
Nothing stopping Apple or another manufacturer picking it up, but they wouldn't be able to protect the design and would not be obligated to pay the original designer.

  • OMG.. thats so awsome... I would littery replace every plug in the house with one of these..

The standard UK plug is so out of date, so many products these days dont even used the earth pin, and have a fake plastic pin just to open the safety flap it the dam socket... it about time somebody came up with a new design. I Really hope this makes it into production.

  • I'm a British expat in Singapore... we use British plugs and sockets too, but most electronic devices are just sold with the standard European round 2 pin plugs. Once the socket protector is opened (by using an adaptor pushed in to the earth), the - very flat - 2 pin plugs can be used as normal.

That said, love this design. What was used to make the animation in the video?

  • Perhaps all of you calling for this product to be made should take the trouble to read BS 1363 first. I'd love to see you explain how it could possibly comply. Posted by Mike, UK
  • Anyone who has trodden on a UK plug with the pins upwards would be thankful for one of these. These look like they will just lay on their side. Posted by Dex, UK
  • I'm really into pain, in fact I love walking on plugs, but space is an issue when going on holidays.

    I want one!

  • That will just break if you stand on it while open and will most likely cost 10 or 20 quid for a new one. At least a normal 13 amp plug can stand up to being stood on and if it does break it's only going to cost you about 50p for a replacement.

They obviously have not checked the wire colours used in a 13 amp plug. Blue for live, reddy brown for neutral!!

  • I developed and marketed the product, Slimplug, which was shown in the film. I am interested in looking at the development of the product. Please would you contact me on info@slimplug.com Posted by John Gillis, UK
  • @John Gillis

If that's the case, then you need to update your website PRONTO. That's an incredible device, and you deserve to make Billions from it.

  • Having meet the desinger at the Royal Collegue of Arts last night I sure his name was not John Gills

  • I cannot believe nobody is making and marketing this plug i am sure it would sell in millions if priced right especially if the "piggy back" adapter plug was available at the same time it is amazing. Posted by Martin Fox, UK
  • Great idea! And would have been worth a major company putting some money into pursuing, regardless of present BS regulations. But, as Laz pointed out, the designer may have falllen foul of intellectual property law. Which would be such a shame and far from the first time.

To me this feels horribly like yet another case of innovation in Britain being stifled by mediocre support, be it the seed finance to get things going, or the business advice on how to go about developing AND protecting the innovation. If this is such an instance, the sheer familiarity of the plug could make this a great case to make a film about and show around schools as a guide what not to do. And maybe make the designer some, regrettably smaller, amount of money into the bargain.

Best of luck to the designer!

  • To clarify, I understand Min-Kyu Choi is the designer of the new plug primarily discussed here. John Gillis's Slimplug is an alternative design which is discussed early on in the video. Posted by Elliot, UK
  • @Mike

I think you will find the inventor has taken BS into consideration...
