Navigon release iPhone GPS app

Pips TomTom to the punch

23 June 2009 4:58 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Navigon has pipped TomTom to be the first satnav application in the Apple iTunes App Store with the release of MobileNavigator Europe, a fully fledge GPS app for the iPhone.

Costing £54.99, the new app includes 2D and 3D maps of Europe and doesn't need an internet connection to work, instead storing all the map data on the device.

According to Navigon, the software can be used in portrait and landscape format, offers "Precise voice announcements" and allows users to access contact details in the iPhone address book.

The application already seems to be a hit on the App Store with customers - 16 reviewers giving it three stars or more.

While most comment on how "simple but effective" the software is, some do express concern about the 3GB install size.

The application requires the latest 3.0 software update.

  • Watch out ... no full 7 character UK post code search (only does 5), very old maps and not sure I like the interface. Very small buttons for when driving ! Posted by Chris, UK
  • There are a few gaping holes such as the post code limitations and no obvious detour button, but so far I'm impressed. I have my iPhone connected to my headunit and the voice coming over the car's speakers is a revelation, no more tinny voices squawking at me! Now I just need a decent cradle for the dash (up to now my iPod has always sat in the glove box).

I'm sure the TomTom app will beat this hands down, but at the moment IMO its well worth the £38 for the UK maps version.

  • Nice but somewhat simple interface. In my opinion still a little rough around the edges, especially in the UI.
The program uses very long time to load and find satelites on iPhone 3g. This is ont a problem of iPhone as Maps finds satelites much faster.
Seems that Navigon has gone out of their way to release before TomTom on the iPhone and ignore some issues.
