Nivio has announced the launch of its nivioCompanion computing device in the UK, with pre-orders now being taken for its late July launch.

Describing the device as "cute", the device is a consumer-aimed thin client solution - a Window-based online desktop where everything is stored-on and run from the Internet.

The nivioCompanion costs £99 and comes with a mouse and keyboard. A package with an LCD monitor will be available for £159.

The online service comes in at £5 per month and offers a virtual 10GB hard drive, applications like Microsoft Word will be charged at £2.50 per month while email is provided by Hotmail.

Nivio claims the total cost of ownership is up to 70% cheaper than a traditional PC, as well as offering money-saving through lower energy costs.
