Apple has announced that it had sold over a million iPhone 3G S models by Sunday 21 June, the third day after the updated handset's launch.

In addition, the company has revealed 6 million customers have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software in the first 5 days since its release.

"Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning", said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO (currently back in the headlines again for rumours about his health) in a statement, perhaps as a way of easing Jobs back into the spotlight as his leave of absence is due to come to finish at the end of June.

"With over 50,000 applications available from Apple's revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever".

O2, the UK operator for the iPhone, said that on the iPhone 3G S' first day on sale it outsold the iPhone 3G by lunchtime and its shops were ten times busier than usual.
