Battery life issues reported with iPhone 3.0 update

Users complain of phones getting hot and draining quick

Battery life issues reported with iPhone 3.0 update

22 June 2009 17:26 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Pocket-lint has learnt that a number of iPhone 3G users are seeing battery life trouble since upgrading to the 3.0 firmware. It doesn't appear to be affecting all users, but some note their handsets getting hot and suffering severely reduced lifespan.

The problem was reported initially by users of the leaked 3.0 pre-build, and put down to it being a beta version, but it appears to have made it into the final release.

"My phone seems to be using about 10% per hour", said one user, with another saying "If you hold the phone near a Speaker then you can hear the phone is constantly transmitting on the GSM radio". Another user told Pocket-lint: "My battery's showing 20% remaining - it was fully charged five hours ago, and I've barely used it".

Apple told Pocket-lint that it isn't an issue that the company is aware of, but that it would be looking into and getting back to us. At the time of writing, that response hasn't materialised, but we'll keep you posted of any updates.

  • Yup this happened to me. 32gb white one, after 1 phonecall it got extremely hot in the centre of the back panel. The battery then decreased after 2 hours....

Got me a little scared however Carphone warehouse happily exchanged the handset straight away. The phone wouldnt even charge or anything which was a bummer over fathers day weekend.....sorry dad.....

  • I use my iPhone 3G all day long. Before the upgrade to 3.0 I would have plenty of battery life to get me through the day and through about half of the next day. Now I am lucky if I have enough battery life to make it through the day. Drastic reduction in battery life. Posted by Jonathan Parker, US
  • Solution:
That was happening to my 1st gen iPhone after updating to 3.0.
So I disabled Push for my Exchange account, and now the problem is solved. Well, not the best solution, since now I have to use Fetch to update my contacts and calendar, but it works until Apple fixes it.

  • I'm seeing a battery drain from 100% to 40% on standby in my pocket all day, with no use at all on the 3GS. Posted by Bob, USA
  • My battery is draining at about twice the speed, and the phone is certainly a little warmer than before. Its even slightly warm when left untouched for a while, which it never used to do.

@ Vinicius - Thanks, I'll turn off Push as I need it to last longer and im interested to see if that makes a difference.

But come on Apple - surely a few new features can't make this much difference!

  • I have a similar problem with drastic reduction in battery life on my 3G since installing the 3.0 update. At around 4 or 5pm the phone has drained off without any warning.
I have now switched off the location and find my phone to see if this helps. But frankly, what's the point in having a phone if you can't realistically run it with the proper specs turned on (don't even talk about 2G/3G settings).

  • My battery drained in 10 hours today and I never made a call. Downloaded email a few times, checked the web a few times and did one "map search." I also used "ToDo" for about 30 minutes.

    I downloaded 3.0 on Sunday.

  • I got same problem on my 3G iPhone, I am looking for how to downgrade until Apple fix the problem, I will never upgrade x.0 again, I can't trust them. Posted by George, Canada
  • I'm having the same issue. I have a 2g iPhone running the 3.0 software and the battery life has reduced tremendously. I barely used my phone today and I had to recharge it 2 twice. It wasn't doing this prior to the update. Not to mention I don't even have 3G or any other battery consuming applications running in the background. Posted by Juan Gomez, USA
  • Same here - before 3.0 my phone would last a full day. Yesterday I had to recharge twice. Last night my phone was fully charged when I went to bed and was completely dead by 6am. The phone is extremely hot at times. Posted by Keith Berry, USA
  • I have a 2g 8GB iPhone. Upgraded to 3.0 and it completely drains my battery. It was full charged at 5:00 pm. I only used once. By 9:30 pm I got a 20% warning. By 10:30 the battery was dead. This is the 3rd day it has done this to me (ever since I upgraded). It gets extremely warm. Did not use to do this. I have turned off push and wifi. However, does this mean that my battery is fried? Will it recovery from this or do I need a new battery? Posted by Sam Peterson, United States
  • iphone 3G 8GB: Since upgrading to 3.0 it now gets hot and the battery life is about 10hrs with very very little use.

Please Apple, Help us out and fix this problem quickly!

I've now resorted to turning all the connectivity side of the phone off (no 3G/wifi/bluetooth/ and have turned off push email) in a hope to regain a few precious hours of battery life lol.

An Vodafone employe here in Greece told me it is probably a problem with the push e-mail.They recommended me to tun it of for now.
Many here have the same problem.

  • Brand new refurb off ebay, I guess I am glad to hear it is a software glitch.. I have turned off push, and am recharging again (it lasted me 5 hours today with wifi with little use because I was at work). I hope this is the problem and not a defective refurb.

Also, this was an an iphone 1st gen. 8gb, and actually push wasnt working anyway, so no loss I guess. It is also unlocked and jailbroken if that makes a difference.

  • Me too.. turned off Find Iphone.. Push... Bluetooth .. my phone is fully charged at 11:30 pm by morning is OFF ..battery dead... alarm never went off... happened 2 nights in row since upgraded.! Posted by enrique, USA
  • Yeah, happens to me too. Before upgrading to 3.0, I used to have it on all day and still have 50% left by end of the day. Now I have to keep it charged.
The battery is also super hot, whether I am using it or not.

  • I have this issue with the battery. I just got off the phone with Apple and they originally wanted to blame it on an old battery (I have the 3G). I told them highly unlikely and they either wanted me to send it in to them or drive an hour to the nearest Apple store to have them test. Apparently AT&T will not troubleshoot any iphones. On top of it all. If they blame it on the battery it will cost $80 bucks to replace or I can get an additional one year warranty for $69 that covers the battery. Also my warranty runs out in 16 days and doesn't cover the battery. What a racket. Posted by John B, USA
  • I'm just going post this message here just to say that I don't think this issue is as widespread as all the comments would initially show. I've not had this particular issue, and several people I know with the 3G have been fine. Theres a little bit of a battery drop from using push notifications, but thats about it. As for the 'Find my iPhone', as far as I'm aware it only will transmit the data if MobileMe requests it. I'm not sure, but I think that's the case. Either way, seems enough people are having problems that it might be an issue with the OS.

Anyway, sorry that people have been having these problems, and hope Apple gets round to fixing this. They seem to have a fairly good track record provided that people complain loudly enough.

  • Upgraded to v3.0 yesterday......now my iPhone only receives calls (say) 10% of the time! The other 90% go straight to vmail without ringing. Vmail doesn't even show on screen so I have to dial 901 to check voicemail....and to see if anyone has left a message! Email/Safari/Google Maps all work fine and I can make calls no problem. However stand the phone near a speaker and it's just constant data traffic. Reset the phone just to make sure no apps running in background etc but still this 24x7x365 traffic. Battery barely lasts a day in standby now - not impressed :( Posted by D R Mays, UK
  • I am haing the same problem. Lucky to get a few hours of battery. WArm to the touch. Have disabled push, wi-fi, locator, etc....no dice. Even restored the phone today. No help at all. Apple tech at 800 number had no idea what I was talking about. I don't think I can hold more than a few days. Is there any way to turn back the clock and return to the prior software version (2.0?) It worked great.....why did I update? how do we let Apple know there are many of us? Posted by Ross Hart, USA
  • I'm relieved to read DR's posting here, so that I know that I'm at least not entirely alone with that second problem. But first: I too have the described battery issues. I upgraded yesterday and almost instantly afterwards, while still attached to my notebook, the back of my iPhone got very hot and would not even charge fully any longer. Since I've unplugged it from the computer less than 10 hours ago, the charge has almost completely depleted already, without me having made a single call or having done anything else but use FB and Tweetie once each for 1-2 minutes, on WiFi. So, yeah, this is completely unacceptable. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a mobile phone if you can't even go one day without needing to connect it to something to recharge. This needs to be fixed yesterday.

But, like I said, I'm also having another, slightly stranger problem. Since the upgrade, I've also started having problems receiving calls. Making calls works fine, sending and receiving texts works fine, but it seems like I can only reliably receive calls when I have 3G turned on, which a) shouldn't really be affecting one another and b) obviously doesn't help the battery life, either. However, even with 3G turned on, the phone used to last a lot longer before the upgrade.

  • Upgraded a 3g phone like all to 3.0 - The battery life went down like a sinking ship! 100% gone after 4 hours of use that on 2.2.1 would have lasted 7-12 hours. Spoke to Apple Cus. Care. they were not aware of the issue, said it should not happen and advised it may be a software error carried by the use of backups. They recommended restoring as a new phone, which I did. Now the phone gets warm not hot and drops about 10-20% per hour dependent on play. I run 2G with wifi, 3g, location off , mobile me push on. Apple must address this one. Posted by Tom, UK
  • Same issue. Replaced my iPhone 3 times in the last few days. Posted by Marty , United States
  • As a software engineer myself, I noticed that this happens after I run some specific applications. These ppalications apparently don't close well and they are still running in the background after you have abandoned them. Posted by JD, Greece
  • Same problem here. Posted by Adrian, Slovakia
  • Same problem on 2g phone, battery drains in about 4 hours. I notice that interference in nearby speakers is almost constant. I have push e-mail on an exchange server. There is no point to turning it off as that is my primary use of the device. VERY FRUSTRATING. I am sure my colleagues that use blackberrys will tell me that this does not happen to them. • I had the same issue with the battery after upgrading but after running a backup in itunes for the second time I notice the battery lasts near to normal (as 2.2.1). Although I don't know and can't promise that this was the solution it seems to be better now. Some apps seem to drain more battery life then others... Posted by Vic, SE
  • I switched-off Push as one other reader suggested. I still get my emails etc in good time with Fetch as the battery is much improved. Try it. Posted by David James, England
  • How annoying is this. I bought a new battery, (my iPhone is nearly 2 years old). Then I had to buy a soldering iron & solder, all because I thought the battery was knackered. Fortunately my son managed to fit the new one OK.
Why didn't I come here first!

  • Never had an iphone before 3.0, so I'm not sure if my battery life is normal or not...So far i'm at 12% Time since last full charge says 6 hours and 50 minutes. Actual usage is closer to 5 hours and 30 minutes...I talked on the phone a few times...one of the conversations was an hour and a half long...i texted quite a bit...What i did the most, however, was play games. Is playing games generally a pretty big battery drainer? Posted by Adam, USA

  • I own an iPhone 3G. I tried every suggestion here, still NO. I even thought the applications are not compatible with 3.0 yet! So I didn't install any. But sadly, it didn't help a bit.

I even had a devious thought; does Apple really issue "updates"? What if these so-called upgrades are actually "downgrades" meant to make your old Apple stuff slower and generally more incompetent? Making the new stuff look a lot better when compared side by side with the old ones? Think about it, some people here are actually convinced that the undesirable performance of their iPhone (especially the 1st gen) is caused by their "old" batteries. This would actually be enough reason to make you buy new Apple stuff.

I don't mean to make Apple look bad. But Apple Support saying that they are "not aware of the problem" is a tad lame. I Googled the issue and came up with a plethora of results!

Shape up Apple. I was a Sony Ericsson fan until the iPhone came. But right now, I reverted to using my old reliable Sony Ericsson G900. It's been in the storage for a year or two, but the battery life is as good as new.

  • Same problems experienced here. 16 gb 3G. Very quick battery drain after 3.0 upgrade.

SOLUTION: Reset network settings and deleted Google App

RESULTS: So far, a LOT better. Back to usual it appears. Will test today for confirmation.

NOTES/RATIONALE: Definitely no techie here, but someone had posted resetting network settings to clear old cache surmising it was a problem some way (so figured to give it a try), and also that Google App wasn't fully compatible with 3.0 and this results in battery drain. They also had mentioned other 3rd party apps as potential culprits, but I thought I'd start with Google app first.

A more feckless collection of wingers would be difficult to imagine.
Not one of you seems to have actually tried anything to fix this!
In the absence of any obvious cause, I re-flashed a 3G iPhone which had been suffering from the power issue and for several days now, have been experiencing good battery life.
Sorry to mention the fact that I actually attempted to 'do' something lest it cause some of you to feel uneasy however, the Ghandhi approach to technology has never been a great love of mine.

  • I had a 3G that had a crack in the case within warranty and Apple gave me a new (they thought) 3G, and they upgraded to OS 3.0. My original 3G on the old OS had good battery life, but the new one with the upgraded OS has terrible battery lilfe--about 7 or 8 hours with very little use. I guess I'll take this one back and try my luck with another 3G. Posted by john, USA

  • Wow, I'm so glad I finally found your comments. I thought it was just me. Here is what I've done and it has still not improved. I'm working with my biz sales rep at the Apple store and most of the geniuses there as well. I'm going to try the "restore Network settings" today and see what that does. But for those that are interested here is what I've been through.

    Symptoms:
    1. Battery life is VERY short (sometimes less than an hour)
    2. Very hot to the touch
    3. Usage and Standby time is exactly the same (under Setting/General/Usage)

    Steps:
    1. Downloaded 3.0 software on June 17th - battery life was very short and very hot to the touch.
    2. Phone started burning through battery called Biz rep - was instructed to delete the 3.0 download from the library, update to 3.0 and restore from back up in case I had gotten a bad download.
    3. Came to store, got new 3.0 software from store computer. Hooked to my laptop and set up as new phone and synced.
    4. Came to store Thursday, June 25th - got new iPhone, store did the update to 3.0 (transfered SIM card), set up as new phone to laptop and synced
    5. Came to store June 29th - got new iPhone again (Transfered SIM card), cleaned out all files of iTunes with "Appcleaner", reinstalled iTunes - new iPhone was updated to 3.0 on store computer, setup as new iPhone on iTunes, synced.

I don't know how Apple wouldn't know about the issue now. I've been in the store three times on the phone once and gotten two new 3g 16gb white iPhones. I alone am costing them a good chunk of change.

  • Iphone 3G 8GB: Since upgrading to 3.0 it now gets hot and the battery life is about 7hrs with very very little use, I notice that interference in nearby speakers is almost constant.

Also suddenly I cant make or receive any calls, when someone call me, he got unavailability message - the network (Vodafone EG) and the coverage is full.

Please Apple, Help us out and fix this problems quickly, this is not acceptable from Apple!!

  • I had the same problems like you guys, and i think i reach something to fix theses problems:
    1- The Battery life
    2- The Interferences with speaker
3- Hot back even with no use

iTunes ask to update the carrier settings...! this is the reason for all the problems (I think) it makes some kind of conflict and like is something processing in the background, consuming the battery and make the phone back hot and also make the interference in nearby speakers.

i fix my problem by resetting the Iphone, then connect to iTune for backup with ignoring any request for update the carrier setting.

Apple support team may investigate my notes and work on it! that might help.

  • owned my new 3G S for about 3 days, noticing the exact same problems, heating up and my battery seems to drain to 20% in 4~6 hours with very little use or just with it in my pocket with the iPod running. i also get about 7 hours of standby time. i left it on my desk the first night i got it and it was battery dead in the morning. i thought it was the hardware, thank God its not. i hope 3.1 fixes this. and soon. 6 hours is unacceptable. by anyone's standards. especially mine.

I have tried the Phone in airport mode and with all settings like push turned off. to no avail.

  • I'm not sure if it's already mentioned in all these posts but I had to turn off "push" (Settings>Mail...>Fetch New Data) AND "notifications" (Settings>Notifications) and then do a reset to stop the phone constantly communicating over the GSM network - it's producing a noise on my speakers AND draining the battery. Had a similar problem on a Windows Mobile phone, push services just drain battery too much - fetching stuff every hour should suffice for me. Posted by Mark H, UK

  • I have had ther same problem with the 32Gb 3GS iphone. I replaced the first one I obtained on contract from Carphone Warehouse and, after three weeks, it suddenly became incredibly not - the battery life was dreadful. Yesterday, the same problem struck teh second unit. It became very hot adn the battery ran down from full charge (it was charged overnight) at 10.30 a.m to 20% by 9.00 p.b. with NO calls being made, no e-mail being used, ni music being listened to and only two text messages being sent. I am very disappointed withthis elementary aspect of operation. Apple gives me the pip at the moment. Posted by Mike Woods, UK
  • Im having the same problem too, i have an iphone 3gs 32gb white, and ive had it for maybe just over a month. The software pre-installed (im fairly sure) was 3.0 and it was doing fine until just a few days ago. Then i noticed the battery would die overnight (the usage says 4 hours, on standby, which is ridiculous) but the thing is, i updated the software to 3.01 maybe 2 weeks ago? and it held out ok until 3 days ago. So i have a feeling its not the software. And also, like many others, it was receiving calls at a lower rate and emitting a radio tone through the speakers and a hot battery.

But it think i have a solution for all the pay-and-go's out there. Im on o2 as well so i hope this makes sense, because i think its worked for me. few more tests.

Under cellular data network in network settings, replace: "idata.o2.co.uk," under APN (top one) with: "payandgo.o2.co.uk," as instructed when buying the thing. For some reason it changed it for me back to idata, and after doing this, the phone INSTANTLY cooled down and stopped the radio tone. ive literally just done this so let me know if any of you notice this has happened. Hope it helps.

  • As an edit to what i previously wrote, this solution DOES work. My phone has been on for well over 40+ hours with alot of music, game and messaging usage and is just know reaching the 20% mark.

So for all those on pay-and-go, try my solution above and tell me what happens.

  • my iphone is only a week and a half old! and i havent even updated.
but now if i charge it before i go to bed it has drained by the time i get up!
i also fail to recieve some messages, could this be because of the sim card transfer?
like when you get your number and call time and bolt ons transfered.

Also i tried Josh's (from england) way of getting thebattry to last. ive only just done it, but you cant hear it through the radio anymore :D.

  • Josh and Beki, I had the exact same problem as you both untill just 5 minutes ago when I read his advice and it worked perfectly!! YOU ARE A LEGEND AND A SCHOLAR BUDDY!

I first noticed the constant static through my stereo last night and seriously thought my phone was screwed up because it's jailbroken and unlocked and thought this must be the price i'm going to pay but it was just simply the wrong settings!. I corrected the Network settings and it has definitely cured the Static, I just hope it cures the draining battery now aswell!! I of course am also an O2 pay and go customer so these settings where completely relevant. I checked the O2 iphone website and noticed that the MMS APN setting should also be updated to 'payandgo.o2.co.uk' if you use it. Apparently it doesn't matter about the other settings.

  • I dont know why my comment got deleted! >:S But I am confirming that Josh's method worked perfect for me to clear the constant static and completely cured the battery drain. I hope this helps somebody else. Was there such a problem with this?? Doubt i'll be back on www.pocket-lint.com again if it is deleted again! Posted by Andy, N, Ireland
