O2: iPhone 3G S outsells 3G by lunchtime on launch day

"Incredible" stats compared

19 June 2009 14:50 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

O2 has announced that the iPhone 3G S has already outsold the iPhone 3G on launch day.

While modest queues for the device have been reported, O2 says: "The iPhone 3G S has got off to an incredible start with news reaching us that by lunchtime we'd sold more iPhone 3G S handsets than we sold iPhone 3G devices on launch day last year".

"Sales are still going strong and we expect to have sold 50% more iPhone 3G S handsets than last year's launch by the close of business today".

As we'd reported earlier, the operator recapped on the stat that footfall to shops this morning was 10 times higher than an average day and the online site saw a 150% increase in traffic.

Those worried they might not be able to nab a 3G S this weekend should note: "More stock is being sent out to stores over the weekend with a further delivery early next week".

In addition, O2 has revealed the snippet that the black iPhone 3G S is outselling the white one by 3:1.

  • Well I have slightly mixed feelings on this subject.

I love my iPhone 3G and I mean LOVE it. In fact my wife has had to begrudgingly accept a special recess between the pillows where the little fella sleeps each night.

I have been joining in the O2 bashing this week with justifiable gusto, as although I wasn't expecting to walk out of contract scot free, I did expect a more palatable upgrade package to be offered.

I am also annoyed about the inflated price of the handset, with the top range model which last year retailed at £59 on an 18 month £44.00 contract , now selling through O2 at a wopping £175.00. That, for those who are running out of fingers to count on, is a price increase of nigh on 200% and almost three times as much as last year.

Prices may be creeping up agreed, but this isn't a creep. Its not even a dawdle, Its a full on Jesse Owens sprint to the moon.

Annoying when Apple said they wanted to keep the handsets affordable and at the same launch prices as last year.

And as for the tethering malarky, some one at O2 must be having a giraffe..or maybe a herd of them.

So I have decided to miss out this model completely as much as I would have liked one, and as the world is naturally driven by the decisions I make, I have confined the iPhone 3G S to being the most unmitigated flop of the year.

However now we have O2 putting on a brave face with talk like this. Hogwash!

The reason why they have sold as many iPhone 3G S' as the 3G last year is that they have more to sell. The limited stock from last year was the chuckle of the century for those who managed to get one, and they were not exactly quick to replenish stock either which just added to our levity.

The internet going into full meltdown whilst a thousand million gazillion fanboys, tried to upload new software and activate their phones not withstanding, it stands to reason that the figures would be higher.

But the question is, will they be higher over time. The majority of Apple fan boys have been alienated from upgrading so they're out, and most others who want an iPhone either already have one or may opt for the cheaper 3G or buy an unlocked phone from abroud or ebay.

I still have high hopes for the iPhone 3G S' dismal performance so O2 will one day say sorry and show us all their reasonable 'ice creams, lollipops and all free today' smiles once again.

At present they are just being greedy and putting on a brave face to cover their mistake.
