Opera promising to re-invent the web

Big "freedom" reveal planned for June 16

Opera promising to re-invent the web

Opera, the company behind the web browser of the same name, has a surprise up its sleeve. It's got a page on its site labelled "freedom" announcing that "on June 16th at 9:00 a.m (CEDT), we will reinvent the Web".

The company recently issued a public beta of version 10 of its browser, so it could be the launch of that. That would be a little disappointing, though, especially as our testing suggests that while good, it doesn't "reinvent the Web".

When announcing the public beta, Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software told Pocket-lint: "we have more surprises on the way". Could it be something that'll elevate Opera into the same ranks as Firefox and Chrome? We'll be there on June 16 to bring you the news as it breaks.

Update: As Pocket-lint reader L.Rawlins notes, the image has a great big cloud in it. Could we be about to see the first cloud browser? Rendering on Opera's servers, and delivering you all you need in a desktop or mobile form? How exciting...

  • If that image is representative of 'cloud computing' as it looks, the potential is tantalising, not least for their mobile platforms. No native codec support, no fear, the Opera server pushing your pages has it and will render content for you.

iPhone users would literally pee themselves, not least where Flash is concerned.

I'm looking forward to this. Thanks for the headsup.
