GSmart S1200 announced

Skinny WinMob smartphone revealed

Gigabyte Communications, also known as GSmart, launched a new Windows Mobile smartphone during Computex and the S1200 as it's called is a break from the company's older models in terms of design.

GSmart has always created feature rich handsets and was one of the first manufacturers to offer VGA resolution screens on Windows Mobile handsets.

The S1200 might not seem all that different to many other Windows Mobile devices these days, but GSmart has come up with a design that can compete with the likes of LG and Samsung, which is quite impressive from such a small player in the market.

The S1200 has a 3.1-inch WVGA display (that's 800x480 pixels) and when you throw in a 528MHz Qualcomm processor, 288MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM, it's starting to look quite competitive.

Add to this the fact that the S1200 is only 11.4mm thick and GSmart is likely to attract some attention, as this is almost 1mm thinner than the iPhone. It's 106mm tall and 52mm wide, which again makes it smaller than the iPhone, but of course the trade of is a slightly smaller display, despite the higher resolution and of course Windows Mobile.

Other features include a 3-megapixel camera with autofocus, but not flash and a high capacity Lithium Polymer battery. The S1200 does support HSDPA and HSUPA, although GSmart didn't reveal at what speed. There's also a micro SDHC card slot for adding extra storage memory.

Finally the S1200 will come with either Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 and GSmart has their own UI on top of the OS and this goes under the name of Smart Vision. Pricing and a release date of this handset is as yet undetermined.
