Panasonic's portable Blu-ray player priced

DMP-B15's cartability comes at cost

3 June 2009 16:00 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Following its CES launch, Panasonic has announced the launch - and price - of its portable Blu-ray player in the States.

The DMP-B15, that raised eyebrows at launch over the thought of a portable BD-capable player with an 8.9-inch screen, will go on sale for more than most decent standalone, non-portable Blu-ray offerings, priced at $799.95, around £487.

With HDMI for hooking up to an HDTV for the full fat high-definition experience, the B15 also gets an SD card slot and Panasonic's VIERA CAST internet accessibility and BD-Live functionality.

The player offers a 2.5-hour rechargeable battery, optional car headset mounts and will hit shop shelves this month. We're waiting to hear on UK launch plans.

UPDATE: UK pricing has now been confirmed, and you're looking at a RRP of £599.99 with stock expected "shortly".

  • This has to be the single most stupid product Panasonic have brought to the table this year.

Putting aside the fact we're in an economic downturn and that charging £487 is unlikely to make many heads turn, it sports a 8.9-inch display, certainly not the way many people would like to watch their high-def movies.

Lets face it, watching movies on the go is a way to keep the kids busy and quiet in the back-seat whilst you're driving to your mother-in-laws on a Sunday afternoon, its not how you'd ideally want to watch anything.

I personally think consumers are more likely to pick up a portable dvd player for £30, bung in a few DVDs at £2 - £3 a pop and get a similar experience.

What's more, laptops are increasingly shipping with blu-ray drives installed for a more reasonable price - failing that they know they can pick a blu-ray drive up for £50 - £60 and watch it on their 10 - 12 inch display.

On top of all that, it doesn't help that it looks like an Amiga CD32.
