Windows 7 confirmed for 22 October launch

General commercial availability now official

Okay, so we were a day out. Following the news that Pocket-lint brought you that Microsoft's next operating system would go on sale on 23 October, it seems the confirmed on sale date for the new software is in fact 22 October.

"General commercial availability" for the OS, the successor to Microsoft's arguably unpopular Windows Vista, has finally been confirmed by a Microsoft exec, after we revealed the timescale back in April.

"We feel confident that we will deliver Windows 7 with our partners on October 22", said Bill Veghte, senior vice president for Microsoft's Windows business.

Although on sale in time for Christmas, this timescale will mean Microsoft misses what's said to be the all-important back-to-school sales period pre-September, but is way ahead of the January 2010 launch the company originally planned.
