Coming Q3

It seems Acer's recent sign up to a membership of the Open Handset Alliance wasn't just for the purposes of making a smartphone, as the company has announced its intentions to launch an Android-based netbook during the third quarter of this year.

While the handset is not due until Q4, the netbook running Google's operating system is set to debut between July and September.

"The Android operating system offers incredibly fast wireless connection to the internet", Jim Wong, Acer's president of IT products said at the Computex show. "For this reason, Acer has decided to develop Android netbooks for added convenience to our customers".

No details on the hardware were provided, but Wong said Acer researchers had been experimenting with Android in several devices, and that he believed Android could spur more netbook sales.
