Record growth for Xbox 360

Sales hit 30 million globally

Microsoft has announced that sales of its Xbox 360 console have topped 30 million globally, and the Xbox Live community is 20 million strong. Sales are up 28% on 2008.

“We’ve always been confident that Xbox 360 offers more entertainment value than any other console on the market, and these latest numbers show that consumers agree,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

Some other stats are included in the report, too. Consumers have downloaded nearly a billion items of gaming and entertainment content from the Xbox Live Marketplace. Xboxers also have more games on average than other console owners. If you own a 360, then you've got an average of 8.3 titles for it.

Arguably, the 360 is doing well because it represents a budget choice in the current worldwide recession. However, for a console that launched in 2005, it's putting up stiff competition against rivals like the Nintendo Wii.
