Sky Player coming to Sky set-top boxes

Satellite broadcaster confirms video on demand inbound

Sky will bring its Sky Player video on demand service to its set-top boxes the company has confirmed to Pocket-lint.

The move, which comes on the back of an announcement of Friday at the launch of the Sky Player on the Xbox 360 games console will mean that millions of Sky customers will eventually be able to access movies on demand at the press of a button, above and beyond the Sky Box Office and Sky Anytime offerings.

"Sky Plus boxes all come with an Ethernet port on the back which we will use in the future to access content on demand to compliment Sky Plus," Sky's commercial group director told Pocket-lint.

Although falling short of a launch date or the exact details of the service, our secret squirrel on the inside told us that the company was working on an offering and that is was going to be "big" when it eventually arrives.

Sky is also hoping however that the current offering of around 500 films will be vastly expanded upon, giving customers access to possibly thousands of movies and hit TV shows like 24, House and Prison Break as long as they've got their box connected to a internet connection.

From autumn Sky customers who also happen to own an Xbox 360 will be able to access 20 live channels and around 500 movies via the Sky Player on the console.

Those who aren't currently subscribers will be able to sign up for the package without the need for an aerial. Sky and Microsoft has yet to price the offering.
