Win a Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2000 dual camera

Just comment on a story for a chance to win

1 June 2009 22:24 GMT / By Ben Crompton

Pocket -lint has teamed up with Sanyo to bring you the chance of winning this pistol grip camcorder.

The rules of the competition are simple, you can enter as many times as you like by simply commenting on any story. It doesn't have to be in depth, detailed or technical, but it does have to be useful and helpful.

You don't have to sign up to comment on the stories, we just ask for your name, location and email address - that does not show up online and is not passed on.

Retailing at £549, the HD2000 offers what Sanyo calls a "Dual camera", basically offering you a still and movie camera in one device. Switching between the two modes is as simple as pressing a button and you get a 16x optical zoom with which to shoot.

The new camera is small and compact, making it ultra-portable and easy to hold for active filming and shooting while on the go.

To be in with a chance of winning this top-notch effort just comment on any story during the month of June. At the end of the month the Pocket-lint team will take a look and choose what we believe is the best one.

  • It does definitely look like some sort of futuristic pistol that would fire lasers at people rather than bullets. But it does look cool, the price is a bit steep though. Posted by David Stelfox, UK
  • Pocketable and cute looks, but having bought items with "dual capabilities" in the past this can sometimes mean dual compromise. Would like to know whether it's easy to hook up to a mac. Posted by colin young, UK
  • It's as easy to hook up to a Mac as putting it in the docking station and connecting via USB. Or, inserting the SDHC card into a USB or Firewire reader and transferring the files. For smooth playback and editing, you're better off having a good amount of RAM and a 64-bit OS if you want to work with the Full HD resolution files, which are recorded as MP4 files. Full HD at ^) frames per second is a considerable amount of data to move around Posted by Colin Young, Jamaica
  • Sorry, that "^)" should read "60" Posted by Colin Young, Jamaica
  • I would like to know why, when MP's have so obviously flouted the law and ripped off the humble tax payer, by claiming for everything and anything, they feel that they should still hold a position of trust and stay in their job. In ANY other industry they would have been suspended,, if not sacked. More importantly they would be put through the penal system for FRAUD. They are there to work for us and NOT to rip us OFF! I feel it will be a long time for many people, before they have the confidence to trust any MP, they have ALL been tarnished. Posted by Andrew Spiers, United Kingdom
  • I'm in the market for a HD camera due to owning a HD TV and a Mac with Video editing software.

Bit concerned that this needs a gutsy Spec PC to edit your filming, which most people with the above set up will do.

Strangely enough before coming to this site, the other Camcorder I was also looking at was a Sanyo as well. This is the VPC-WH1
£200 cheaper and waterproof to 10 feet as well. Ok the HD is 720 max however there is a good 30x optical zoom on it and a good range of features on this one. (without worrying about pc specs) The camera is only 2 megapixels. However in my view I think video and stills should always be separate. You don't buy a Ferrari for a slow Sunday morning cruise!

As far as quality is concerned, you can't go wrong with Sanyo. I think however, their range needs investigating before you commit to buying due to them all cross sharing vary similar features.

The above model is ideal if you want to slip this in your pocket and enjoy candid moments in High DEF. However if you want serious HD recording, you may want something with more substance and maybe a bigger price tag again!

I would go for this model for out and about capturing those holiday moments with great views and fun times. If however I wanted to record something more serious then it may need to be a bigger (not necessarily better) model that feels and looks like a industrial camcorder.

  • I'm actually comparing sanyo & panasonic,
Sanyo have a better ergonomic design compare to the conventional design.
Having a much bigger Mos, means better quality compare to other rival.
    Great job Sanyo!

  • Would I be able to shoot safely in public without being arrested - I'd take the risk for a smart camcorder like this!!

  • After looking at a number of reviews , the overall impression is that the designers didn't consult enough potential customers.
What turns me off is the lack of low light functionality, an inability to lock in customised settings and the marked resemblance to an old Ronson Electric Shaver. I just do not like the shape and would feel embarrassed to be seen using it.
It is also quite expensive !

  • Very James Bond Posted by mandy willson, uk
  • Very, very compact and ideal. Hate carrying bulky cameras around. Posted by Beverley, United Kingdom
  • If you want a slim camcorder you should look at the Flip. Spend an extra 30% and the Panasonic HDC-TM300 offers good value for money - and it is worth comparing this to Canon's Canon Vixia HF S10. At the high end Red One is set to change the way professionals shoot footage. Unfortunately, the Xacti is a camcorder in search of a niche market. I suspect that the street price of the Xacti will fall and at this point it might compete with the likes of the the Flip.

Marketing departments will promise you HD but fail to deliver "Full 1080p".

Lens size is another very important factor: we know that mobile phone cameras offer plenty of megapixels and deliver mediocre images - it is no different with camcorders. A better lens means a better image. This is where the Xacti will perform better than its smaller cousins (the lens is a reasonable size). Unfortunately for the Xacti the sensor is a little half-baked; in low light noise does become an issue.

This camcorder is worth getting if
    1) you don't quite have enough money for a larger camera
    2) you like the James Bond grip
    3) you are not too worried about "grainy" low light footage and
    4) you don't plan to pan the camera during a shoot.

If you just want a cheap camcorder you might be better off shopping around or waiting for the Xacti product reviews to put a decent dint in the price.

The other thing to consider is that some "prosumer" digital cameras shoot reasonably good video footage - so if you are buying a camera at about the same time then it might be worth rolling the two purchases into one.

Sanyo makes decent equipment but on this occasion the recommended retail price is "ambitious" and claims of high definition could be construed as misleading.

  • gadgets DO get smaller and smaller.

Sanyo Xacti IS the future! i mean, LITERALLY. you only get to buy it in the future because it's so freaking expensive you have to save up for it first. haha

still camera and video cam in one small package is three thumbs up, nevertheless :)

  • I got the Sanyo Xacti E2, and it is a very good family cam. easy to use and water resist to 5M. not bad... Posted by Family Guy, usa hawaii
  • Sanyo has made a really nice camera that should be seriously considered if you want to shoot and edit HD video.

    Pros:
Full 1920 x 1080 60p video MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 is totally underestimated by most people but they will realize the importance of this when they want to edit the videos. Unlike most other cams that encode video in AVCHD that needs rendering before editing this format is very easy to handle and recognized by most OS and with drag and drop editing.
This fact by itself is worth the purchase price

Great color video (typical of sanyo)
    Very portable
Pistol grip is not as uncomfortable as many have said. i find it quite practical (have a 1010)
Slow motion although a gimmick really works.
    12 megapixel still photos

    Cons:
    Image stabilization

No inbuilt memory (cards are cheap nowadays)

I hope that Sanyo continues with the video format in its next upgrade and that the image stabilization is better than the existant.

  • I have used a Sanyo Xacti underwater video camera for two years now and it's my camera of choice wherever I go, the larger and more expensive Sony video camera stays at home. I have been searching around for an upgrade and this camera ticks all the boxes especially with the ease of use 'pistol grip' which I find both comfortable and intuitive. My only gripe is that I always carry a 'stills' camera (Panasonic Lumix) and do not require this option in a video camera but that's me, I'm sure others will find it a 'must have'. Good review but I have to admit Sanyo are pushing on an open door with me. Posted by John Thomas, England UK

  • Based on the photo above of the Sanyo Xacti, it does resemble a semi-automatic weapon that one Officer Murphy (Robocop) would facilitate. Brings a whole new meaning to Point and Shoot. 'Your move...creep!' Posted by NM, United Kingdom

  • Looks cool. \my 1st camcorder was so big it needed a shoulder bag with the video recorder in it. it was so heavy i hardly used it as it was a pain to lug arround. This one looks like it would slip into my pocket and go everywhere with me. the uses are endless and i can see it being a must have gadget. Posted by Andy Smith, UK

  • This seems like the perfect answer for me. I am a professional cinematographer looking for a small form camera to do personal/weblog videos. I've researched the flip, kodak zx1, and others, but they all fell short.

This camera is still more than my ideal budget, but for full 1080p video and a mic input, methinks I was asking for too much. :)

  • Really like the idea and have tried video on a camera and pictures on a camcorder in the past. Neither worked very well.

Sounds like camera functionality impaired like many mobile phone cameras. However, it can only be a matter of time before someone gets it right and Sanyo certianly keeps trying!

  • I was looking at camcorders in Shanghai recently and tested one of these. It was considerably cheaper then the bigger brands, but my concern was reliablity.

My last Sanyo product was a walkman, but that was about 17 years ago, but I have not heard a lot about their reliability since. Saying that, sony have not faired too well either. I just had to return a DSC-T1 because the ccd failed and my camcorder (sony) also had a faulty ccd.

I would like to give Sanyo another try. This model looks good, and when I had this demonstrated, the quality was good, the zoom and focus were fast (inside in a shopping center going from near focus to distant focus). The only feature I would like to have seen would be the ability to use an external microphone. I have only really seen this on the current JVC line.

  • One month ago I lost my Sanyo HD1000 in the Frankfurt Airport. Within it were the best photos and video I had ever taken (from my trip to Capadocia Turkey). The HD1000 is an exellent camera although it did have come concerns in low light. I've reviewed the specs on the upgraded Sanyo HD2000 and believe that this will be my next camera I purchase.. It's simply excellent. Posted by A. Mueller , CANADA
