PC manufacturer Acer has confirmed rumours that it will be launching an Android handset in 2009. It also says that it will launch nine other models this year, all running Windows Mobile.

The company announced four of those at Mobile World Congress earlier this year - the M900, F900, X960 and DX900, but this will be its first phone carrying Google's operating system.

Acer entered the smartphone market after taking over Eten in 2008 and it aims to reach 6 to 7% of the smartphone market by 2012 to 2013. Other PC manufacturers including Asus, HP, Lenovo and Dell have expressed an interest in creating their own handsets.

Meanwhile, smartphone manufacturer Nokia has experimented with notebook PCs, though rival BlackBerry has confirmed that it has no plans to make computers and will be sticking with handsets.
