New app uses cameraphones to assist the blind

Item recognition by camera could help the disabled

A company called iVisit is building an application called SeeScan that it claims could help blind people idenfity objects.

It takes advantage of cameraphones to detect objects via image recognition and then read aloud what it believes that it's looking at.

The company offers banknotes as an example of how the technology could have practical implications - differentiating between denominations.
