Microsoft opens up My Phone beta to all

Microsoft's My Phone cloud sync service, which Pocket-lint brought you news of earlier in the year, has entered a public beta testing period. Anyone can now sign up for the service.

That means that if you've got a Windows Mobile handset, then your contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, photos, videos, text messages, music, and documents can all be synced to the cloud, providing you with a persistent backup.

Users are granted 200MB of storage space, but you'll need a minimum of Windows Mobile 6 for the service to work. Current users of My Phone will need to upgrade their client in the near future for it to keep working, but all settings and data will be retained.

  • When was the last time you heard of a Windows Mobile device with less than 200MB of maximum storage? Sounds fine for the phone and PIM data but it's a little limited if you add videos and photos to that.

    I'll stick with syncing my contacts and calendar to Google Apps with Google's existing support for ActiveSync (just set the sync address on your phone to m.google.com, enable SSL and put in your account details).     Posted by GK, UK
