The London Eye is to get a tech makeover with the announcement of around £12.5 million investment in upgrading what's apparently the UK's number one paid-for visitor attraction.
Having already seen 33 million visitors, the attraction's capsules are to get removed and made over one by one, in order to "future proof" the Eye, and its pitch on the Southbank for "many years to come".
As well as a "minor visual facelift", and improvements to the heating and ventilation system, one of the upgraded capsules will get four ceiling mounted screens and enhanced multimedia and Wi-Fi capabilities enabling the capsule to provide music and on-screen visuals which all other capsules will be built to support in the future.
The project will see the removal and upgrading of one of the 32 capsules at a time, with a non-operational capsule filling the gap on the London Eye until the final capsule is returned - which is scheduled to be in time for the London 2012 Olympics.
