Viewsonic expands into smartphone displays

Will offer screens from 3 inches to 300

ViewSonic has announced plans to expand into what it calls the "3G smartphone industry", with China due to be the first region to offer displays for mobiles, followed by Europe and the Americas.

What will be ViewSonic's first foray into the smartphone market, the company says the new products will mean its product line goes from 3 inches to 300.

Viewsonic says consumers are demanding larger screens, greater colour saturation and contrast to take advantage of services such as mobile internet, television and video applications, gaming and eBooks.

"With 20 years of display experience this is a natural extension of our product expertise", said James Chu, chairman and chief executive officer of ViewSonic.

"This is an important strategic step for ViewSonic, as it allows us to apply our display technology to an even larger and rapidly growing worldwide market".
