Sony Alpha 230, 330 and 380 DSLR cameras debut

Three new models for Alpha fans

Sony has announced three new DSLR cameras on Monday in time for the summer.

The new models, the alpha 230, alpha 330 and alpha 380 confirm previous rumours on the Internet, and offer a resolution range from 10.2 megapixels to 14.2 megapixels for the alpha 380.

According to Sony, the entry-level model; the alpha 230 will be the "world’s lightest DSLR featuring an APS-C sized image sensor and in-body image stabilisation".

The new models, which follow Canon and Nikon launches in recent months, will come with a 2.7-inch LCD screen, six scene modes and on-screen help aim to help it appeal to the beginner DLSR photographer.

The camera will also feature a Quick AF Live View for "responsive ‘freestyle’ shooting" that supposedly "keeps pace with what’s happening around you".

Users will also get continuous shooting at up to 2.5 fps, a new self-timer drive mode, which grabs a quick burst of three or five frames and an HDMI socket for connecting to a HD-Ready television.

The alpha 330 and alpha 380 models will up the ante with a faster Live View mode (2 frames per second) and tilt screens like the Nikon D5000. The alpha 380 will also add an extra 4 megapixels of resolution to the mix bringing the count from 10.2 megapixels up to 14.2 megapixels.

SonyStyle retail pricing has been confirmed for the new models with the A230 at £530, the A330 at £610 and the A380 at £720.

  • More of an update tom the current camera's really with better menu's and HDMI. Prices quoted seem a bit steep. Jessops are advertising the A330 at £549 which is £200 more than the A300. A new menu and HDMI cant justify a £200 premium can it? Posted by JJMcClure, UK
  • This is a move in the wrong direction for Sony SLR's for at least three reasons:

    1) Sony is apparantly aiming for convincing customers in the brigde-camera segment to move onto dSLR, but ask any retailer how many bridge-camera's they selling and the answer will be virtually none,

    2) EAL function has been removed... No one being serious about buying a better camera will accept Sony removing important SLR features,

    3) Compatibility to Bravia televisions... Well, get real - this is a useless feature and there's no positive point in sacrificing SLR functionality for "gimmicks".

I am truly DISSAPOINTED as these camera's seems to "kill" the innovative Minolta mindset and make it much easier for Canon/Nikon to ignore Sony as a "serious" player in dSLR's. What a shame. These new Sony dSLR's are not camera's, but "fashion toys" :-(

In my mind Sony would have done much better fixing some of the inherent problems in the Alpha 200/300/350 series rather than introducing "downgraded" new releases. I still miss an option to upgrade firmware and to have at least just a single "user-programable mode" - and I miss a histogram (that is available on many cheaper pocket camera's).

I fear for what stupidity we'll se for the Alpha 700 when it will be replaced - and I'm afraid that my (huge) investments in Alpha mount equipment is now a big mistake if this is an indicator for the roadmap Sony intents to continue upon.

I think the only way to make up for this wrong turn, Sony has to launch a "no-nonsense" Alpha 700 "little-brother" with all dSLR-features intact to fill the gab between these new (sorry to say it) somewhat useless camera's.
