Facebook's "Verified Apps" programme is to go live, following the annoucement of the scheme back in November of last year and the news that there are now 52,000 Facebook applications.

Facebook has announced it is to launch a new Application Directory and the inaugural Verified Applications, "in the coming weeks".

This will mean more up-to-date "improved categories", updated application profile pages, and application "stories" showing in a user's stream.

In addition the "Verified Apps" will be prioritised higher in the directory and will appear alongside a green tick mark in the directory and a verified badge on the application's new Profile Page.

When announced, the programme saw a storm of criticism from angry developers as the social networking site is asking for a fee of $375. The certification lasts for a year, after which they must pay the same again for another 12 months.
