Boots is the latest retailer - and arguably one of the largest to date - to announce it is to trial a contactless payment system.

The high street chain is teaming up with MasterCard and RBS WorldPay for 15 stores in London and six in Liverpool to let MasterCard's "PayPass" card customers wave and pay at specially equipped terminals.

Due into shops from the second half of this year, the system is aimed at speeding up transactions of £10 and under to help ease rush hour queues with the "Tap & Go" system.

Barclaycard has so far been the biggest player in contactless payment cards in the UK, launching both credit and debit cards with the tech.

A recent chip development from Philips-owned NXP will see new NFC-enabled mobile phones, capable of such payments, hitting the market in Q3.
