Sony has announced the development of a "coin-sized" high definition camera module.

Designed for use in security and industry, the 8.3-megapixel effort is smaller than a £1coin measuring in at 9.5 x 7.1mm.

The "MCB1172" from Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division is capable of delivering 720p, 30fps video and includes movie stabilisation, face detection, autofocus and motion autofocus.

There's also a high sensitivity mode and a slow-mo function, delivering 120fps as well as the option of 16x zoom.

Now available for mass production, products with the module in will likely hit the business markets later this year.

  • Although a good idea, if the sensor size is this small, technically it might be HiDef but people will be very disappointed with the quality of the final image. The actual micro-sensors will be too small and too bunched together to produce the kind of image 'HD' was originally concieved for. Like DSLR cameras sensors that are DX format (in Nikon speak), it's been proved that you can shove in massive quanitities of micro-sensors behind a lens but if they are too small the image is yuck.
On the plus side though, if it is used in security cameras perhaps the police might be able to actually recognise the perps commiting the crime.

  • I should declare that I'm the PR for this... but I'm a traditional cynic and I have to say I was very impressed.

It's true that you will never get a phone camera to produce pictures like an SLR, however, because of the quality of the image on the TV I assumed it was another camera, one with an optical zoom, being demoed.

And, yes, it's for security and industrial, which means that any improvement is better than nothing.

And personally, I really want one to attach to my bike and catch people being idiots on the way to work. Phoning, doing makeup, shaving and... oh yes, nearly killing me not paying attention.

  • I want one!
small enough to go on my handle bars, rucksac shoulder strap, windshield visor and ideally the option to plug and play with a large memory stick (or preferably generic memory card(4g or more?) it must have decent audio and above all decent battery life - slomo auto activated when no noise or no sound - tamper proof files and perhaps 2 hours plus recording with upto 8 hours standby. I need it keyfob sized or smaller.

    Any takers?
