Wolfram Alpha launch date set

Google rival to go live within days

Wolfram Alpha launch date set

11 May 2009 10:40 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

The date has now been set for the launch of Wolfram Alpha, the new search engine set to rival Google's dominance in the market.

In a blog post, the company has confirmed: "We plan to launch late next week, with the official date now set for 18 May".

As many of you will know, Wolfram Alpha is a "computational knowledge engine" created by British computer scientist Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, that will be able to compute the answer to any factual question.

This means the new search engine should be capable of understanding what it is you are asking and be able to calculate a precise answer to your query, rather than just returning a list of relevant links.

This isn't remotely designed to be a Google competitor. It's not even a search engine. It's a massive scientific and statistical database with a natural-language front-end and the ability to combine and calculate ad-hoc results from its data.

What's that old adage regarding journalism... never let facts get in the way of a good story?

  • @ adrianaitken- oh dear, no- ask jeeves never did anything close to this, where ask jeeves searched as normal just with a simple operation to remove any question words/ the/ a etc, then displayed normal search results from that- this uses mathematical algorithms to mathematically store much more basic information logically- so it can do what askjeeves did with taking out rubbish words- but then it simply gives you a page with the answer you're looking for- rather than a list of sites where you might find that answer

so this is much better for quickly finding truthful facts- but not so good for researching
