The next generation iPhone is likely to contain a "magnetometer", or digital compass, a recent leak has revealed.

The next model of the iPhone is widely expected to be released this summer - tipped for a June debut - and hardware revision rumours are rife.

The latest comes from US blog Boy Genius Report that has obtained images of a debugging menu from the iPhone OS that mentions the feature.

BGR states: "We just got a couple images from one of our Apple ninjas and it appears to show a compass option in one of the debugging menus. Our source says this is obviously for a built-in magnetometer in the upcoming iPhone hardware revision".

Late last year it was rumoured that the next-gen iPhone would offer advanced motion sensing capabilities via a built-in MEMS gyroscope.
