LinkedIn has announced it has hit a milestone of 40 million members worldwide as the site marks its 6th birthday.

Founded in 2003 by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn currently adds one new user every 2 seconds.

With 10 million of those 40 million members in Europe, the professional networking site says it has added 250,000 new UK members in the last 2 months alone.

This new influx brings the total number of members in the UK to 2.25 million with 500,000 members in London alone.
