T-Mobile UK in crisis

Operator to be forced into merger or sale

1 May 2009 17:03 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

While T-Mobile UK is busy organising singalongs in central London, it seems the company is under serious threat of being forced to merge or - worse still for customers - being sold off.

The operator, described as "under performing", is suffering from such losses that parent company Deutsche Telekom's two main shareholders, the German government and Blackstone, are pressing for a quick decision on a sale.

With no clues as to what might happen to existing customers, T-Mobile's UK division may merge with a rival (with next along the food chain 3 mooted as a good option by commentators) or even sell off its assets if it can't recover from losses, its CFO said at a shareholders meeting.

The Financial Times insider source states that the German government and Blackstone want "a quick decision [from executives] about fixing the UK", so expect more news very soon.

  • I am not suprsised they are having problems in the UK, I found the standard of T-Mobile customer service to be very poor. One example, I wanted to upgrade my PAYG SIM to a £15 per month (30 day rolling) sim only contract.

The reply from T-Mobile was that there was no way I (or anyone) could upgrade and keep my mobile number, I was welcome to the contract but I must have a new number as they had no way of giving/using? a PAC for the upgrade.

The advice I was given was to port out to another provider for a month and then port back in to a SIM only deal and then I would keep my number. I pushed the point further and was told by a supervisor that this advice was correct.

My solution was to port out to the '3' (Hutchison) network as i had been a previous customer and found them to be pretty good and there I have stayed ever since. They do have an off-shore (Indian) customer service but I have always found them to be good, polite, honest, efficient and pleasant.

I am even happier that I went back to 3 as my calls will be even cheaper than ever due to 3 introducing free UNLIMITED Skype on all PAYG & contract accounts, no FUP, no top ups needed or hoops to jump through.

  • you complete ass, yes u can, yet another glueles gobshit, you can transfer your number when you migrate from payg to a pay monthly plan, you get credit checked and then from that you can pick what plan u want, and then migrate the number, its not upgrading its migrating, so please get your facts correct, and by the way t-mobiles customer service is world class, and i would not have 12 lines with them Posted by gavin, wales
  • I agree with gavin, i find T-Mobile's service charges to be not only fair but competitive! instead of giving me complicated cash-backl/claim back offers i have a tarriff that lets me use it whenever i want, even to call 08 numbers free of charge!!!!

  • I agree T-Mobile's tariffs are poor, the flext plan nevertheless is great value for money.
It was inevitable one of the major players would have to be sold or merge in this market. Might as well be them I say!

  • been with t-mobile for several years, as a result of this I get 1800 texts or 900min a month, unlimited internet, and blackberry services. total 22:75 a month. no-one can match that, when companies call me to swap, i tell them the tarif and they always say, "noway we can beat that" and hang up. customer service is excellent and fast. • T-mobile to me its great, thier customer service skills are excellent and they have thier customer to heart.
I love T-mobile and wouldnt want to loose them. Please let thier parent company do something to save TMUK.
