Virgin London Marathon ballot closes in record time

30 April 2009 12:24 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

The Virgin London Marathon 2010 entry ballot has been completed after 2 days and 16 hours - beating the previous record by over 15 days, despite access problems reported by many as the site went live.

Virgin Money says there was "unprecedented demand" for places for the 2010 race, so the online ballot entry was temporarily closed on Monday 27 April to allow the London Marathon team to add extra website capacity to meet the overwhelming demand.

"After the success of last Sunday's race and the beginning of a new dawn with Virgin we were expecting a massive response for next year's race but even we were surprised by such a fantastic reaction to the opening of the entry ballot", said race director David Bedford.

"As we run a ballot and don't allocate spaces on a first come first served basis, no-one will be disadvantaged because of the temporary issue on Monday. We do of course apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank people for their patience".

In total, over 120,000 runners have been accepted as the ballot closes, but people wishing to run for a charity may still be able to do so as major charities will have a set number of entry places that they may offer to those agreeing to raise a certain amount of money.

  • Overwhelming demand? More like overwhelming lack of planning. I love this race but the entry system this year and last was a joke. It took longer to fill up last year because they closed the entry process down for a week because they couldnt cope so to c**k it up again and then try to impress with talk of it being so popular etc... Bunch of jokers.

I suspect behind this PR Spin people will lose their job over this as the London Marathon messed up and they know it. It couldnt be a worst start for Virgins sponsorship.

  • I was building up my rejections so that eventually I could gain a place. This is a joke. I am being put back by yet another year. Posted by Patrick, UK
  • I emailed the site on the day of the 2009 Marathon and was told the entries were not open, but I would be notified when they were. I never received that email and have now missed out. Posted by Anon, uk
  • This was my first time registering for the London Marathon. I tried to register the first day it opened but was told to try back within two to three days. I didn't wait the two to three days but tried again within 24 hours and was able to apply. I've run 12 marathons within the United States and will be running the Berlin Marathon in September. I'm hoping to run London as one of the 5 major marathons. ps-I didn't find the website difficult at all. Posted by Robert Harris, USA
  • I don't know what you the moaning is about. I went onto the site and registered with no hassle at all. Posted by Deborah Williams, UK
